Star Wars: Last Jedi Movie Title Was Director’s Idea, Not Lucasfilm’s

Star Wars: The Last Jedi's title came from director Rian Johnson, not Lucasfilm. Hot on the heels of two generally well-received Star Wars movies, The Last Jedi arrived in 2017 in a flurry of great anticipation. Fans were excited to see the grand return of Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) following his wordless cameo at the end of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and there was much interest in learning how the Skywalker saga would continue. However, to say The Last Jedi proved to be polarizing would be quite the understatement. Star Wars fans were soon divided over Johnson's story decisions, particularly when it came to Luke.

One of the more surprising elements of The Last Jedi was Luke's characterization. The once bright-eyed hero had become a cynical recluse, much to the horror of dedicated Star Wars fans. Matters weren't helped when Luke ended up dying during The Last Jedi's conclusion, further cementing the fact that the ominous title was referring to him, as Johnson revealed before the film's release. Ahead of Johnson's confirmation, there was some debate about the meaning behind the title.

For those interested in the behind the scenes facts about The Last Jedi, Johnson has shared some new details on social media. Earlier on Tuesday, Johnson was asked if he was the one who came up with the title The Last Jedi, or if it was given to him by Lucasfilm. The writer-director responded, "It was me, had it very early in the writing process."

Lucasfilm has a bit of a reputation of being controlling when it comes to the creative process, but this further highlights how Johnson was given free rein to do as he wished with The Last Jedi. Instead of merely following the typical Star Wars formula, Johnson tried something completely new. While some fans appreciated how he handled certain plot points (such as Rey's parentage), others were heavily displeased with his alterations to the universe they loved. Clearly, though, Johnson knew what he wanted from his Star Wars movie from the beginning, and he stuck with it.

Johnson will reportedly return to Star Wars for another trilogy, though updates on that front have been very quiet for a while. In fact, Star Wars is currently on a break when it comes to its films, instead opting to focus on the television side. At this point, it's unclear as to whether Johnson will get another chance at crafting a Star Wars movie, but if all he gets to do is The Last Jedi, it varies from person to person as to how successful he was. At least he came up with a pretty cool title!
