The 10 Highest Grossing Directors Of The 2010s, Ranked According To Box Office Mojo

In the 2000s, it was a huge milestone for a movie if it surpassed one-billion dollars at the box office. But as reaching the number became more common due to inflation and studios capitalizing on shared universes, in the 2010s, it is almost seen as underperforming if a movie doesn’t hit that number.

Studios turn to directors who, though they might not be seen as some as the most creative or original, get the job done. And whether it’s through directing silly animated movies, CGI fests, or superhero movies that comic book readers could never have imagined, these directors have turned in billions for their producers.

10 Pierre Coffin - $2,786,804,683

It’s no secret that outside of superhero movies, it’s animated features that bring in the big bucks for the studios, and Pierre Coffin must be treated like a god over at Illumination, as he managed to make the studio $2.7 billion with one franchise. The Despicable Me and Minions movies are some of the highest-grossing animated films of all time, which also makes them some of the worst movies that made $1 billion at the box office.

9 Bill Condon - $2,878,287,721

It could be easy to pass by Bill Condon without thinking he’s one of the most bankable movie directors in Hollywood, as he hasn’t directed many big hitters, and the movies that were box office hits weren’t very well received.

Despite there being a lot of cringeworthy moments in the series, Condon directed the last two movies in The Twilight Saga, which made a combined $1.5 billion. Then, in 2017, he helmed the live-action remake of Beauty and the Beast, which made almost $1.3 billion alone.

8 Peter Jackson - $2,931,390,211

Peter Jackson only directed three movies in the 2010s and they almost made a billion dollars a piece, and it’s all thanks to being an extension of The Lord of the Rings.

Peter Jackson’s obsession with hobbits hasn’t just given audiences dozens of hours of entertainment, but it has earned Warner Bros billions of dollars too, and though most series’ box office results generally drop off with sequels, not only did The Hobbit’s financial success remain consistent, but they all also outperformed the first two LotR movies.

7 Michael Bay - $2,989,990,227

Michael Bay is responsible for some of the movie industry's most undeserving billion dollar milestones. Both Trasnformers: Dark of the Moon and Transformers: Age of Extinction far exceeded one billion dollars, the first of which was at one point the fifth highest-grossing movie of all time. The movies Bay directed outside of the toy series underperformed for a Michael Bay production, but due to the success of Transformers, it hardly makes a difference.

6 Christopher Nolan - $3,147,432,843

Tenet might tackle the time travel paradox in interesting ways, but despite the movie’s high concept, it is the lowest-grossing Christopher Nolan movie in 14 years.

However, he had an amazing run in the 2010s, starting with the similarly confusing Inception, which made more than $800 million. Following that, Nolan directed the final entry in The Dark Knight Trilogy, which was the director’s second billion-dollar grossing movie, and then with Interstellar and Dunkirk, which made a combined $1.3 billion.

5 Jon Favreau - $3,470,877,509

Jon Favreau has been one of the most active filmmakers of the decade, and not only that, but the quality of his work has remained incredibly consistent. Favreau is the showrunner of The Mandalorian and has his own food show on Netflix, which is a spin-off of his movie Chef, one of the best movies for food lovers. But the meat and veg of his work this decade are his Disney remakes The Jungle Book and The Lion King, making a combined $2.6 billion.

4 James Wan - $3.5 Billion

James Wan is one of only two directors two have two completely different movies cross one-billion dollars at the worldwide box office, as both Furious 7 and Aquaman crossed that milestone and they are a part of completely different franchises. The only other director to do this is James Cameron (with Titanic and Avatar.)

On top of those goliath movies, Wan is responsible for some horror movies that hugely over-performed at the box office, including Insidious and The Conjuring, which was one of Quentin Tarantino’s favorite movies of 2013.

3 J.J. Abrams - $3.8 Billion

Given the fact that J.J. Abrams was steering the ship of two of the most beloved franchises of all time, the director has made Paramount and Disney a hell of a lot of money. Abrams has directed the highest-grossing Star Wars movie of all time and the highest-grossing Star Trek movie of all time. Due to how successful those movies are, his other movie of the decade, Super 8, doesn’t even make a difference to the director’s placing, which is why the film is one of the most underrated sci-fi movies of the past 20 years.

2 David Yates - $4.1 Billion

Continuing his tenure in the wizarding universe, as he directed the final four Harry Potter movies, David Yates worked closely with J.K. Rowling to further the cinematic world with the Fantastic Beasts franchise.

Not only did the final two Harry Potter movies gross a combined $2.2 billion, but the two Fantastic Beasts movies were also huge hits at the box office, regardless of how negatively received they were. Yates’ one movie from the 2010s outside of the wizarding world was The Legend of Tarzan, which was also a huge hit.

1 The Russo Brothers - $6.7 Billion

It’s hardly surprising that the Russo brothers, the directors of the highest-grossing movie of all time, are the highest-grossing directors of the 2010s. Not only were the directing duo at the helm of Avengers: Endgame, but they also directed Infinity War and two Captain America movies.

It wasn’t just because their movies are a part of the MCU as to why their movies were so profitable, but the Russo’s also had fresh takes on all the heroes, especially with Captain America: Winter Soldier, with it being far superior to its predecessor being somewhat of an espionage movie.
