Glen Schofield's first venture with his newest studio, Striking Distance Studios, was finally revealed at this year's Game Awards, as The Callisto Protocol. Details about Striking Distance's first major title have been vague since it was announced back in 2019, until the first official trailer was unveiled earlier today, giving players a first look at Striking Distance's upcoming survival horror game.
Schofield gained notoriety in the gaming sphere for his work on successful titles like Dead Space with the studio now known as Visceral Games, and the Call of Duty franchise with his own studio, Sledgehammer Games in collaboration with Activision. He founded Striking Distance Studios after a brief hiatus as a subsidiary of PUBG Corporation, and works as the studio's active CEO. Their first official project remained under wraps, with nothing know about the genre or even the title of the game, let alone a release date. Billed only as a narrative title in the PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds universe, the only other information available was Schofield's assertion that the game will be "quadruple A."
The game's first official trailer, as well as its official title, debuted at The Game Awards as The Callisto Protocol. Schofield describes the game, which has a distinct Dead Space flavor, as a futuristic survival horror story that takes place in 2320 in the maximum security Black Iron Prison on Jupiter's moon, Callisto. The trailer reveals an unnamed inmate awakening in a dark cell, to a glitchy hologram ordering an unseen crew to a dock. The tension builds as shadowy creatures dart out of his line of sight, until he comes across a nameless, faceless horror that consumes him, as an unknown figure watches on a surveillance screen. The figure walks to a window to see a cargo ship arriving to the prison - ostensibly the monsters' next meal.
True to Schofield's modus operandi with Dead Space, The Callisto Protocol is based on surviving an alien horror in space, and relies on dark environments and slow reveals to build up the tension. The title is still a long way off from completion, with a release date set for 2022, but so far, it looks pretty glorious - a true testament to what current-gen consoles can do.
There may be more information about the game coming up next week on the game's newly launched Discord channel, on December 17 at 10am PST. And as far as Glen Schofield is concerned, it's nice to see he hasn't lost his flair for suspense, considering how long he kept everyone in it.
The Callisto Protocol is set to launch on consoles and PCs in 2022.
