The Mandalorian season two was everything fans of Star Wars could have hoped for and more as a follow-up to the critically-acclaimed first season. Season two exceeded expectations, gave plenty of fan service in the form of cameos without relying on them, and essentially raised the bar yet again.
Jon Favreau is easily one of the most beloved figures in Hollywood today; not only did he start the MCU off with Iron Man in 2008, but he also gave us The Mandalorian and, of course, Baby Yoda, A.K.A. Grogu. Season two was filled with many shocking and awe-inspiring scenes, lets take a look at the ten best moments from the sophomore season of the world's favorite Star Wars entry.
10 Cobb Vanth
Fans were teased in the very first episode of season two as the return of the fan-favorite, Boba Fett. In chapter nine, "The Marshal," Mando heads to Tatooine after being tipped off about the possibility of another Mandalorian. When he encounters a figure wearing green Beskar armor, fans first thought it was Boba Fett, but soon learn that the armor was recovered by Cobb Vanth, the Marshal of a small outpost. It's the appearance of Cobb wearing the armor which is initially shocking, with the post-credits scene revealing an armorless Boba Fett which added to the awe.
9 Mando Saves Grogu From Bandits
Upon his return to the Razor Crest after retrieving the Boba Fett armor from Vanth, Din and Grogu are attacked by a group of bandits. Of course, Mando makes short work of the unlucky hoodlums, but things take a turn for the worst when one of the bandits seizes Grogu and puts a knife to his throat.
It's a nail-biting scene, but Din hatches a plan on the spot to rescue Grogu by trading his jetpack for him, using a remote control to send the bandit up towards the heavens before dropping him to his death, and thereafter retrieving his jetpack and ensuring Grogu's safety.
8 The Razor Crest Crashes In A Nest
In Chapter Eleven, on the way to his destination with Frog Lady, Din encounters two X-Wings piloted by New Republic soldiers. After his ship is flagged, a chase and dogfight ensue, resulting in Mando making a quick decision to make a shaky landing atop an ice sheet on the planet. However, the shelf cracks, resulting in the Razor Crest crashing into an underground cavern. The three passengers are stranded, and Din has to begin making repairs. However, Frog Lady decides this is the best time to have a hot spring bath.
Grogu goes off in search of her, prompting Mando to follow. They find Frog Lady, but they also stumble upon a nest of ice spider eggs, which begin to hatch right before the mama awakens. What follows is a tense, stressful, and anxiety-inducing chase scene as Mando has to fight off hundreds of critters which protecting both Grogu and Frog Lady. They prevail eventually, but the scene is super stressful to behold.
7 Bo Katan Saves Mando And Grogu
On his quest to find more of his kind, Mando boards a ship with a crew that promises to take him to his people. However, it's a ruse to get his Beskar armor, and, to do this they, toss Grogu into the jaws of a sea monster they have caged onboard. Din wastes no time and dives in after Grogu, but becomes trapped with him.
At this point, fans' nerves must have been spiking with stressed-induced adrenalin, but, right before Din and Grogu drown, three other Mandalorians jetpack in to save the day. One of these Mandalorians is Bo-Katan Kryze, a fan favorite from the Clone Wars animated series.
6 The Razor Crest Is Destroyed
In the episode which many critics have called the best, The Tragedy, Moff Gideon's Imperial Remnant cruiser catches up to Din and Grogu on the planet which Ahsoka told them to visit so that Grogu could use the magic stone. It's one of the most unsettling moments in the series, as fans have seen the lengths and pains that Din goes through to keep his ship in shape. Gideon blows it to oblivion, leaving only the little joystick ball which Grogu treated as a toy, as well as the Beskar steel spear which Ahoska gifted Mando.
5 Grogu Is Caught By The Dark Troopers
During the chaos unfolding between Moff Gideon's Imperial Remnant forces and Boba Fett's defense of Fennec Shand, Mando, and Grogu, Gideon deploys his new toys. These are Dark Troopers, which are basically the most badass droids to appear in the Star Wars canon since the Destroyers in the prequel trilogy.
They jet in, and, without any remorse, grab Grogu and fly off with him. It's the scene you knew might happen but didn't want and when it does, it's both shocking and disconcerting. Poor Grogu. Poor Mando. Poor us.
4 Mayfeld Kills Hess
During a scene in "The Believer", Mayfeld and an unmasked, highly-stressed Din are basically forced to have a drink with Valin Hess (The Night King from Game of Thrones played by Richard Brake). Mayfeld, a character seeking redemption for his time as an Imperial soldier, tries to get a rise out of Hess by bringing up the genocidal atrocity that was Operation: Cinder.
Hess, who seems at this point to have figured out that these two troopers are perhaps not who they appear to be, decides to amplify his callousness by promising to use the Rhydonium to “create havoc that’s gonna make Burnin Konn just pale by comparison.” Mayfeld, who served during Operation: Cinder at Burnin Konn which saw tens of thousands of his comrades perish, is unable to keep his cool and shoots Hess at point-blank range. Before the other troopers in the canteen can react, Mando and Mayfeld rain blaster shots upon them before escaping.
3 Luke Skywalker Comes To The Rescue
When it appears that all might be lost for Mando, Bo-Katan, Grogu, and the other Mandalorians, who are about to be butchered by Gideon's Dark Troopers, a singular X-Wing passes the bridge viewing station. At this point, hardcore fans who had been reading all the theories as to who might have heard Grogu from the magic stone, probably knew that it was indeed the galaxy's only trained Jedi, Luke Skywalker.
It's all but obvious by the point he activates his iconic green-colored lightsaber, but, fortunately for more casual viewers, once he defeats all the droids in force crushing and lightsaber fashion, he reveals his face to Mando and the rescue team on the bridge. To make the scene even more shocking and awesome, R2D2 enters, and it's actually the droid who helps in convincing Grogu to leave Mando and be taken into the safe care and training of Skywalker. We're not crying, you're crying.
2 Mando Becomes The Barer Of The Dark Saber And Has A Claim To The Throne of Mandalore
During the finale, Mando and Gideon faceoff with dark saber and Beskar spear. Mando eventually defeats him and brings the Imperial Remnant admiral to the bridge along with the Dark Saber to Bo-Katan. What he doesn't know is that Gideon intentionally lured him to Grogu's detention cell, knowing he would be defeated by Mando.
Why? Because whoever defeats the bearer of the Dark Saber not only has a claim to it, but they also lay a claim to the throne of Mandalore, something that Bo Katan has long fought for.
1 Boba Fett and Fennec Take Jabba's Palace
In what is quite possibly one of the best post-credits scenes from any piece of fiction, the show cuts to a familiar staircase and throne room. It's Jabba the Hutt's palace, and sitting in his place is Bib with his massive Lekku. He was, up until Leia killed him, Jabba the Hutt's main servant.
Fennec and Fett make short work of the guards and Bib, and Fett takes his seat atop the throne while Fennec picks up a bottle of some form of space booze and sits on the armrest beside him. It's obvious that Favreau was taking cues from the MCU here, as this is how the writers decided to announce the long-awaited Boba Fett TV show, The Book Of Boba Fett. After a finale that was filled with action and surprises, this extra scene was the macaron on top of the cake.
