Titans introduced the latest canine cast member playing Krypto the Superdog in season 3. The series initially premiered as DCUniverse’s flagship live-action series in 2018, but this fall, Warner Bros announced the show would migrate to HBO Max. Like so many productions, Titans season 3 was delayed due to the coronavirus, but now that filming is underway, the cast has given fans sneak peeks into filming. However, it seems there are some critical differences between season 3 and the previous years.
Some of the changes in season 3 will be cosmetic, like Kory Anders's (Anna Diop) new Starfire suit or Jason Todd’s (Curran Walters) transformation into the Red Hood. The DC FanDome event also teased new characters, such as Barbara Gordon and Scarecrow. Now another new cast member makes his presence known as the canine from Krypton, Krypto the Superdog, has been recast.
Joshua Orpin, who plays Connor Kent, revealed the newest animal actor playing Superboy’s best friend, Krypto, on Instagram. The super canine will be played by a rescue dog named Pepsi, who was adopted by Titans' animal trainer Melissa Millet from Lucky 13 Animal Rescue in Kansas City, MO. Oprin reported that on top of being "timid and lacking socialization," Pepsi had also tested positive for heartworm. Luckily, the COVID delays allowed the pup to recover, and he’s now "healthy, happy and brave."
Oprin also included a photo of himself on set in Superboy costume, posing alongside a stuffed dog and stuffed tiger. Presumably, the fuzzy toys are stand-ins for Krypto and Gar Logan, aka Beast Boy (Ryan Potter). Orpin joked that the shot with his inanimate costars is indeed a "real scene" and that "believe it or not, this is professional acting." Hopefully, when the show airs, the stuffed animals have been adequately replaced with a tiger Beast Boy and Pepsi as Krypto.
Krypto was first introduced alongside Conner in season 2 as a fellow subject of Cadmus’s experiments. Much like his comics counterpart, the dog was Conner’s constant companion and fought by his side with an impressive range of powers. Not much is known about Conner and Krypto’s season 3 storyline, though the Red Hood will reportedly hunt down the whole Titans team.
The team will also cross paths with Kory’s sister Blackfire (Damaris Lewis). Considering the tentative bond formed between Conner and Kory when she used her powers to heal him in season 2, perhaps Superboy and his loyal hound will insert themselves into the Tamaranean conflict. Regardless of what's in store for Titans season 3, Pepsi seems like the right dog for the job!
