What Nintendo's Switch Pro Needs To Compete With PS5 & Xbox Series X

With the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X taking the internet by storm, many gamers have moved their attention away from the Nintendo Switch to play with their new toys. The new consoles boast incredible load times and even more impressive graphics that dwarf the limited capabilities of Nintendo's Switch. Early third-party games like Immortals Fenyx Rising will be available on both the Switch and the new consoles, but unless Nintendo releases a Switch Pro in the near future, the company may have some difficulty competing with Microsoft and Sony's flashy offerings.

It would be simply incorrect to write off the Switch after its massive success over the past three years. The console has surpassed the sales of many previous Nintendo consoles and has games like Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe with over 20 million copies sold. Even though the platform was underpowered during its time competing with the PS4 and Xbox One, the console still put up an aggressive fight.

One of the biggest and most common criticisms of Nintendo is that the console manufacturer often fails to provide third party support on its hardware. However, the Switch has made more of an effort to combat this, with Switch ports of games like DOOM, L.A. Noire, and Skyrim. Even so, many of these are ports of last-generation titles, and the Switch ports of PS4 and Xbox One games that do exist run comparatively poorly. 720p and 30 fps (at best) are what's commonly expected from the Switch when it comes to AAA, third-party titles, which are only acceptable because of the console's portability and convenience.

Sadly, that's how the Switch fares with PS4 and Xbox One games, so PS5 and Xbox Series X ports probably aren't even possible on Nintendo's hybrid console. However, a Switch Pro could give the console enough power to run these new games, even if they're of lesser quality. A big start for Nintendo is to offer an internal SSD instead of a hard drive so that the Switch Pro can compete with the load times of the PS5 and Xbox Series X. A Switch Pro would also need increased performance and resolution so that its visuals can maintain the clarity of the completion. In an ideal world, the Switch Pro would run at a 4K resolution and 60 fps, but it's far more realistic to expect a simple upgrade to a stable 1080p, which would still be a noticeable improvement.

Nintendo also needs to keep in mind that portability and battery life are major factors in the Switch's appeal. If adding extra performance would hinder these features, the company could instead release an enhanced dock that adds the aforementioned upgrades for those who play docked. There are many players who purchased a Switch or Switch Lite to play games like Mario Kart and Animal Crossing, but they're less likely to play the console in this way. Because of this, the Switch Pro dock could be advertised to hardcore gamers looking to push their console to its limits with extra horsepower. It would also be perfect for enhancing games like Breath of the Wild 2 or Metroid Prime 4. It's not a perfect solution, since the dock wouldn't be portable, but as long as each game is still playable on the tablet itself, a properly designed Nintendo Switch Pro is necessary to keep Nintendo thriving in the PS5 and Xbox Series X generation.
