With COVID-19 causing many Hollywood delays in 2020, this year fans will finally — hopefully — get to see some of those big movies they were previously promised. Whether it is on VOD or in theaters, there look to be some big releases coming for 2021 that feature some big stars as well as some names audiences might not know yet.
With every year at the movies, there are those new talents that emerge and steal the spotlight. Some of these soon-to-be stars are youngsters just starting out while others have been waiting for this big break. Looking ahead at some of the high-profile movie releases, 2021 promises some major breakout stars.
10 Harris Dickinson
The Kingsman franchise is set to release its third entry in 2021, this time with the prequel story The King's Man. The period action movie will explore the origins of the secret spy organization known as Kingsman and will focus on one of its first members.
Harris Dickinson is set to play the lead role of Conrad, a World War I hero who is recruited to help the newly founded organization stop an evil plot. Dickinson is a relative newcomer whose biggest role to date was as Prince Philip in Maleficent: Mistress of Evil. Seeing how Kingsman turned Taron Egerton into a star, Dickinson could be a similar overnight success.
9 Emma Mackey
Kenneth Branagh will return to direct and star in the ensemble murder mystery Death on the Nile, a follow-up to Murder on the Orient Express. While the movie has an all-star cast including Gal Gadot and Letitia Wright, Emma Mackey looks poised to steal the show.
Mackey has impressed many with her standout performance in the Netflix series Sex Education. However, Death on the Nile is her first significant movie role and the trailer puts her front-and-center as one of the most prominent characters in the story.
8 Michael Gandolfini
Fans of The Sopranos are excited to return to Tony's New Jersey with the upcoming prequel movie The Many Saints of Newark. The movie will tell the story of Tony Sopranos' younger years and his introduction to the mob world he would later lead.
Filling the shoes of James Gandolfini would be a daunting task, but the movie seemed to find the perfect person for the role. Michael Gandolfini will take over the role his late father made famous. With impressive work in The Deuce and the upcoming Cherry, Gandolfini seems ready to carry on the legacy.
7 Mckenna Grace
In another example of sons carrying on the legacy of their famous fathers, Jason Reitman will direct a sequel to Ivan Reitman's beloved Ghostbusters movies. This new film will focus on the family of Egon Spengler, played by the late Harold Ramis in the original Ghostbusters.
The movie will reportedly include Spengler's granddaughter, played by young Mckenna Grace who has appeared in Captain Marvel and Young Sheldon. It looks like Grace will be getting in on the ghost-busting action and could be a new hero in the making.
6 Lewis Tan
Though video game movies don't have a great track record, fans are really hoping Mortal Kombat will be one of the rare exceptions. The movie will feature many fan-favorite characters from the video game series, including Scorpion and Sub-Zero, but it will be a new character at the center of the story.
Lewis Tan has been announced to play Cole Younger, an MMA fighter who gets caught up in the world of this deadly tournament. To be headlining such an anticipated movie really sets Tan up to become the next great action hero.
5 Anthony Ramos
Some fans may recognize Anthony Ramos from his amazing performance in Hamilton. He is set to reteam with Lin-Manuel Miranda for another musical, this time on the big screen. Miranda is turning his other acclaimed musical, In the Heights, into a movie with Ramos in the lead role.
As impressive as Ramos was in a supporting role, this unique project will really give him a chance to step into the spotlight and show off his considerable talent.
4 Lauren Ridloff
The upcoming MCU movie Eternals promises to be one of the most daring works in the cinematic universe. It also is packed with familiar faces like Angelina Jolie, Richard Madden, and Kumail Nanjiani. But one lesser-known member of the cast is already getting some attention.
Lauren Ridloff will play the Eternal hero Makkari, the first deaf hero in the MCU. Ridloff has already shown her talents in The Walking Dead and Sound of Metal, but the prospect of her becoming a Marvel hero is very thrilling.
3 Austin Butler
It takes a brave actor to tackle a role as iconic as that of Elvis Presley, but Austin Butler seems to be up to the challenge. Butler will play the so-called "King of Rock and Roll" in Baz Luhrmann's upcoming untitled project.
Butler made an impression with his work in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and he will be sharing the screen with Tom Hanks in this Elvis project. This is the kind of role that, if done right, will launch Butler as one of the most sought-after stars in Hollywood.
2 Simu Liu
Thanks to various delays, 2021 will see a lot of MCU projects crammed together. One of the most exciting among them that seems to get lost in the shuffle is Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.
The movie will feature Marvel's first Chinese hero with the skilled fighter Shang-Chi, who will be played by Simu Liu. Canadian fans might know Liu from the sitcom Kim's Convenience where he has proven himself to be a funny and charismatic actor. As the newest MCU hero, he's bound to become a household name very soon.
1 Lashana Lynch
One of the first movies to be delayed due to COVID-19 was the latest Bond offering, No Time to Die. While fans are still anxiously waiting to see Daniel Craig's latest outing as Bond, many of them are more intrigued by Lashana Lynch's role in the movie.
Judging by reports and the trailers, Lynch seems to be the new 007, taking over when Bond left. Lynch already proved her hero chops with a role in Captain Marvel, but to take on a position like 007, it's only a matter of time before she's headlining her own movies.
