Just like in movies, there are television actors who get plenty of kudos for their work, from actors like Julia Louis-Dreyfus the Ty Burrell to the entire casts of shows like Friends and The Big Bang Theory.
Then, there are movie actors who have shifted to small screen work for new projects and really wowed viewers, like Nicole Kidman, Julia Roberts, Anthony Hopkins, and Reese Witherspoon.
But amidst all of this talent are actors who have been quietly working on the small screen and producing impressive performance after impressive performance. In some cases, they have also appeared in movies. But in every case, while they have received quiet praise, none has reached the level of recognition they deserve.
10 Antony Starr
While his name might not be instantly recognizable, his face most certainly is. Though without the gorgeous blonde locks and signature blue uniform, fans might pass right by the dark-haired New Zealand actor on the streets, not recognizing him as the man who plays Homelander in The Boys.
Starr not only hits it out of the park playing the narcissistic, troubled superhero on the Amazon Prime Video original series, he did the same in his leading role on the AMC series Banshee. Beyond his piercing blue eyes that easily draw viewers into every character he plays, Starr is a fantastic actor that fully immerses himself in every role.
9 Rhea Seehorn
While Better Call Saul was supposed to be centered around the title character, Saul Goodman, as a prequel to the series Breaking Bad, it was clear after a few seasons that Rhea Seehorn's character of Kim was easily a co-lead and the best character.
Playing the girlfriend of Jimmy (a.k.a. Saul), her quiet, morally strong character with a dark side is so mysterious, she steals every scene. Is she really a good person, and why is she so sick of being good? Her internal struggle is felt every time, and that's all because of Seehorn's compelling portrayal. She also wowed on screen in Whitney, I'm with Her, and Franklin & Bash.
8 Andrew Lincoln
It's no secret that The Walking Dead has long been ignored come awards season for every category but ones like make-up and special effects. Yet many of the actors from the long-running series, namely Andrew Lincoln as Rick Grimes, have delivered deeply emotional, heart-wrenching performances and dialogue over the years.
Lincoln, who is also known for his role in the Christmas-themed movie Love, Actually and the British Channel 4 sitcom Teachers, could do amazing work beyond The Walking Dead universe, and he is beginning to take on other roles. It's only a matter of time before his talent is truly recognized.
7 Lily Rabe
She has played a number of characters on American Horror Story as well as a lead role in the sci-fi series The Whispers. She has even been nominated for a Tony Award for playing Portia in The Merchant of Venice.
Most recently, Rabe brought life to an otherwise peripheral character on the HBO miniseries The Undoing. Despite acting opposite A-listers like Hugh Grant and Nicole Kidman, Rabe held her own and made the character of Sylvia one of the most likable ones on the show. It wouldn't be surprising to see Rabe's stock in Hollywood rising over the coming years.
6 Indira Varma
Anyone who can play a role opposite a rising star like Pedro Pascal as Varma did on Game of Thrones as Ellaria Sand and still steal every scene has true talent that should not be ignored. Varma also appeared in the series Paranoid and currently stars in Amazon Prime Video series Carnival Row.
She is considered to be a method actor, and while she has appeared in movies and television series, Varma remains sorely underrated.
5 Inbar Lavi
The best way to describe Lavi's performance in series like Imposters is electric. She has a magnetic quality about her that makes her difficult not to pay attention to. In addition to playing a con woman who made men fall in love with and marry her only to steal their money then leave in Imposter, Lavi also appeared in shows like Imposters, Underemployed, Gang Related, Prison Break, and Lucifer.
She has played everyone from a con artist and manipulator to a trained soldier, and activist, and should be getting far more attention than she has been.
4 Letitia Wright
Wright is getting more attention nowadays thanks to her role as Shuri in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) movie Black Panther. But she has the talent to secure even bigger and better roles. She first broke onto the scene in that captivating episode of anthology series Black Mirror called "Black Museum," and, before that, in the Steven Spielberg movie Ready Player One.
Since Black Panther, she reprised her role in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame and appeared in the Steve McQueen miniseries Small Axe. She brings a level of quality and depth to every performance.
3 Garrett Dillahunt
He's one of those actors everyone knows and appreciates but no one really puts him at the top of the list when considering some of the best television actors. But he should be. His performance as John Dorie on Fear the Walking Dead helps make the character one of the most likable on the show.
Also known for his roles in Burn Notice, Raising Hope, Justified, Deadwood, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, ER, and The Mindy Project, Dillahunt has played so many types of supporting characters and should be heading up a show of his own.
2 Michaela Watkins
Another familiar face on television, Watkins is often known more for that short-lived stint on SNL than anything else. But she's actually a brilliant comedic actor who has flown under the radar for some time.
Watkins has appeared in series like Casual, Trophy Wife, The New Adventures of Old Christine, Enlightened, and Search Party, as well as movies like The Back-up Plan, Wanderlust, and Enough Said. Most recently, she continues to steal scenes in The Unicorn.
1 Riz Ahmed
His stock is rising in Hollywood but still, the true talent that Ahmed possesses hasn't been fully appreciated. Not only has he turned heads in miniseries like The Night Of and movies like Nightcrawler and Rogue One, but he has also won awards, including an Emmy for The Night Of.
Ahmed, however, was previously known for his rap career, which might have led some to believe that he didn't truly have acting talent. But through his roles to date, and upcoming ones, chances are that Ahmed will be on many more radars going forward.
