Avengers: Every Character Defeated in the Phoenix Tournament So Far

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Avengers #41 from Jason Aaron and Javier GarrĂ³n

The Tournament of the Phoenix Force is well underway with the latest issue of Avengers from Marvel Comics. Having returned to Earth, the sentient and destructive energy source known as the Phoenix has pitted several different heroes and rogues from across the Marvel Universe against one another, granting them portions of its power in order to decide whose most worthy of it. In Avengers #41, the battles have begun and there have already been some notable defeats, slowly whittling down the list of contenders for who may become the ultimate host of the Phoenix's power.

In the previous issue, the first two contenders were revealed to be Captain America and Doctor Doom. Both of them received amplified powers and abilities thanks to the Phoenix, and they were forced to face off against one another in a battle for the ages. However, after seeing Captain America continually coming back again and again no matter what Doom threw at him, the dictator of Latveria was the first to lose, as he forfeited the battle. Once Captain America emerged the victor, he was transported back to the White Hot Room, a realm of existence created by the Phoenix Force to house its hosts. It's here that the rest of the contenders were revealed, and Avengers #41 from Jason Aaron and Javier GarrĂ³n begins the tournament in earnest.

So far, there's a handful of contenders who are already out of the Tournament in this issue. Black Panther faced off against the Man-Thing in the one of the first rounds, and despite the odd creature's massive size thanks to the Phoenix Force, King T'Challa defeated him in short order. Next came Hyperion, who was matched-up against the fighter Shang-Chi. While Hyperion wields great physical strength, the power of the Phoenix Force was too much for his mind. Frightened by how open-minded he was becoming, Hyperion yielded, all while Shang-Chi continued to meditate, welcoming the increased awareness and connection to the cosmos. However, one of the more deadly defeats came from Red Widow's duel with Howard the Duck. Seeing as how Red Widow is a lethal product of Russia's Red Room, the battle was very short (though extremely brutal), ending in a flurry of bloody feathers.

It should also be noted that Jane Foster's Valkyrie was pitted against the villain known as the Orb. While not completely confirmed by the end of the issue, the Orb was more than likely defeated, judging by the impressive hit Foster delivered. There were also other fights that were still ongoing by the issue's end as well, such as Luke Cage vs. American Eagle, Shanna the She-Devil vs Devil Dinosaur, Black Panther's second fight (this time with Nighthawk), and Echo taking on Namor beneath the waves a burning ocean.

There are sill plenty more fights to come as the Avengers Phoenix Force arc continues, and there's still a handful of contenders who haven't even fought yet such as She-Hulk, Wolverine, Black Knight, and more. Regardless, as the Phoenix Force continues to whittle down its prospects, it will certainly be interesting to learn not only who its ultimate host will be, but what they'll do with the Phoenix's power once they get it as Jason Aaron's Avengers continues from Marvel Comics.
