The fans found an old video where Big Brother legend Dr. Will Kirby claims that he invented the term "showmance." The viewers first got to know Dr. Will on Big Brother 2. The fans and the producers of the show largely credit him for setting the blueprint of how this competition is played. He got to the finale mostly without winning any competitions, but with pure strategizing and social skills. In the end, Will won the $500,000 grand prize and solidified himself as the best BB player of all time.
A few years after his first reality TV stint, Will Kirby came back to compete on Big Brother 7, which was the series' first-ever All-Stars season. This time around, against all odds, Dr. Will made it to Final 4 along with his Chilltown ally Mike Boogie. Aside from his great strategizing, Will is also often remembered for his Big Brother showmances. On BB2, he had a fling with Shannon Dragoo. He then had a showmance with Janelle Pierzina on BB7. Now, some fans that perhaps didn't watch the show since its earliest seasons are finding out that Will quite literally invented the term "showmance" for the series.
Recently, the fans have uncovered an old video that features Dr. Will Kirby talking about his experience on Big Brother and crediting himself for inventing the word "showmance." Will says in the video, "A showmance is when you have a romance on a reality show. It's not for real." He then jokes, "I am so adamant that this is going to be a common reality phrase that I have since [obtained the copyrights to] 'showmance.' Anyone who uses this phrase without my express written consent will be sued. So, 'showmance,' I can say it, you can't." You can watch the full video on Reddit.
It is certainly not surprising that Dr. Will invented this famous Big Brother term. The fans don't need any more reasons to love Will or respect him as a player, but here's yet another reason, if anyone out there needed it.
CBS has confirmed that Big Brother 23 is coming in 2021. As always, we can expect the unexpected.
