Black Adam Will Prove He’s Better Than DC's Justice League

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Justice League: Endless Winter #2 from Andy Lanning and Ron Marz.

The finale for DC's Endless Winter is here, seeing the Justice League and their allies facing the Frost King once and for all. However, Black Adam, one of the first super-powered warriors to have ever faced the Frost King back in the 10th Century, is far from happy by the event's conclusion. This is because he is vehemently against the League's decision to try and reason with the Frost King in an attempt to reach the man behind the monster. If it were up the Adam, the Frost King would have been killed and destroyed as soon as possible with extreme prejudice. As a result, Adam has grown to view the Justice League as complete failures as the planet's protectors, and it looks as though Adam is going to do something about it in DC's future.

When the Justice League located the heart of the global blizzard the Frost King had created, several of the heroes get to work fighting back the infinite legions of ice avatars at his disposal, all while Batman and Wonder Woman find the Frost King himself with Diana's mother Hippolyta (another warrior who fought in the first Endless Winter). According to the Queen of the Amazons, they nearly managed to reach the man behind the Frost King back in the 10th Century by bringing his family to him. The Frost King is really just a man from Greenland who manifested extremely powerful and equally uncontrollable ice powers. All he truly wants is to be reunited with his family, who were frozen in the past as well. The only reason it didn't work back then was because of Black Adam, who saw the family as bait to catch the Frost King of his guard, rather than as the solution to redeem the man. Black Adam's rash actions only delayed the Frost King's inevitable return here in the present. And it seems Black Adam is just as ruthless now as he was then, having learned nothing from the past.

Superman was able to prevent Black Adam from killing the Frost King, and the man Edwald Olafsson was brought back to end the Endless Winter. In the aftermath, the Justice League promised Edwald that they'd find a way to free his family from their ice prison, and Edwald determined to go back into cryostasis until he can be reunited with them. However, Black Adam was enraged that the League stopped him from doing what he believed had to be done. He also saw them as failures, seeing as how the Frost King was even more powerful than during his first attack. Due to their refusal to permanently end the Frost King for good, Adam also sees the Justice League as menaces, and the end of the event seems to indicate that the ruler of Kahndaq might be looking to prove his superiority as a protector in the near future.

Black Adam has long been the ruler of Kahndaq, and he's often characterized as a ruthless and immovable being, harnessing the magic of the gods for the protection of his people but also for his own ends and personal retention of power. The fact that he now intends to be more proactive in his opposition to the Justice League could prove to be a big problem in the DC's future.

However, teases for DC's Infinite Frontier see Black Adam as a member of the League itself. Does this mean he'll be seeking League membership as a means to reshape them to his more ruthless tactics from within? While the peaceful path worked out this time in Endless Winter, what about the next time? Adam is certainly one of the more complex characters in the DC Universe, and it can be hard to tell whether or not Adam will go full supervillain or something in between. Will he attempt to destroy the League, or try and help it? In any case, here's hoping the League will be ready to manage whatever it is Black Adam has in the works for them in DC Comics' future.
