After bringing in superheroes, bounty hunters, and rapping hamburger salesmen, Fortnite will soon have official representation from the world's most popular sport, soccer. While big pop-culture and movie crossovers usually make more headlines, Epic Games has partnered with sports leagues before for inclusion in Fortnite. This includes bringing the other form of football to the game via official uniforms approved by the NFL and cosmetics inspired by the Air Jordan brand during Season 9. This week's soccer-themed update is far more in-depth than either of those two options, meaning that there might be interest in more collaborations with other leagues in the future.
Indeed, it seems that there's no stopping the crossover train when it comes to Fortnite. The game recently wrapped up a huge crossover storyline with Marvel's comic division, creating storylines that are canon in that universe and importing more heroes into a gaming space than Square Enix's Marvel Avengers. The end of that season led to a story beat where heroes from across the multiverse could now land in Fortnite, making it more likely than ever that more characters from film, TV, gaming, and even the world of sports might appear alongside the growing cast of crossover characters.
This week, Fortnite hits the pitch in more ways than one with uniforms, game modes, and emotes all from the world of soccer. Epic Games has partnered with twenty soccer clubs from around the globe, and players can choose from any of them when putting on the in-game uniform. Players will also be able to celebrate big moments with football legend Pelé's Air Punch emote, which is an official collaboration between Pelé's management company and Epic Games.
Players can get a chance at getting the Air Punch and the soccer uniform by participating in the in-game Pelé Cub tournament on January 20, with top players also entering into a contest for a real-life signed jersey. Those who don't win the emote can still purchase it from the in-game shop later in the week on January 23. For those who just want to kick around the soccer ball for free, Epic Games has also added a football-inspired island to Creative mode. Players can join in teams of four for in-game tournaments to kick, punch, or slam the ball with a pickaxe towards the opponent's goal. The mode comes complete with power-ups and speed boosts, making it a distinctly Fortnite translation of the world's favorite sport.
It's refreshing to see Fortnite reflect its standing as one of the most popular video games in the mainstream by moving beyond superheroes and gaming icons for its crossovers. The debut of Travis Scott's concert was an event in the realm of not just video games, but technology as a whole. The interactive realms of cyberspace aren't rolling out in any way as they did in the films of the 1990s, but that's probably for the best. Virtual worlds are very much becoming a reality little by little, and Epic Games is at the forefront of that almost by accident with its accessible game about building, shooting, and looting.
Fortnite is available now for free on PC, Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch and supported mobile devices.
