The season introduced new characters like the 'Ortho god' Dr. Atticus Lincoln and brought up some very important discourse, such as those surrounding mental health and violence against women. Actress Kim Raver made a comeback as a series regular in season 15 after having left the show way back in season 8, and Amelia Shepherd finally started showing signs of stability in her life after leaving Owen, who was having a baby with Teddy Altman.

10 Saddest: E 7. "Anybody Have A Map?

Grey's is well known for content that practically spills over with emotion. Keeping true to that, this episode sees a beloved nurse at Grey Sloan die tragically during a difficult delivery despite Richard's best efforts, leaving the entire hospital devastated.

Moreover, Catherine is diagnosed with a malignant tumor on her spine, and is afraid of how Richard might react to the news of her diagnosis. As it turns out, she is right to be apprehensive, as Richard acts out after he is unable to save Frankie, the nurse, and is arrested after vandalizing a bar.

9 Sweetest: Ep 17. "And Dream Of Sheep"

Amelia Shepherd had not had the easiest of lives, so to see her carefree and happy is pleasant indeed. She and Link make an unlikely pair who meet quite by chance at a conference, after which the sparks fly instantly. And in those sparks lie the makings of what is at least for the moment a happy relationship, as viewers of season 17 would know.

Owen and Teddy start coming closer with Amelia out of the picture, and Teddy heavily pregnant with Owen's baby. Jo also has a few cheerful moments before she sinks into depression in the final episodes, delving into the worldwide growing narrative on the importance of mental health.

8 Saddest: Ep 6. "Flowers Grow Out Of My Grave"

In another episode that really gets the tears flowing, all the many people that the series has said goodbye to over the years, and all the many friends and loved ones that Meredith Grey had lost, shows up as spirits.

In what is traditionally a Mexican holiday called the Day of the Dead, families pray for the dead and the latter's spirits are said to visit those they loved. Fans get a heart-wrenching glimpse of everyone they loved and lost, from the adorable George O'Malley to Lexie Grey. Doc the dog, Mark Sloan, Ellis Grey and finally, 'McDreamy' himself. In preparation for further loss in Meredith's life, she also learns of her father Thatcher Grey's terminal illness.

7 Sweetest: Ep. 21. "Good Shepherd"

Fans might recall the terrible dinner at the Shepherd residence when Amelia convinced Link to pretend to be Owen as she dragged him along to visit her sisters. The latter, especially her older sister Kathleen, gave her a very hard time, reminding her of all the many mistakes she had made in her life, and generally making her miserable in front of her Link.

What's sweet here is how Link agreed to this major charade to help Amelia lie to her family, and even stood up for her as her sisters and mother ganged up on her. This incident clearly cemented his relationship with Amelia and his efforts to help her were genuinely sweet.

6 Saddest: Ep 19. "Silent All These Years"

The episode contributes towards a crucial conversation as it highlights violent sexual attacks on women, and the need for the victim to come forward.

While Jo and Teddy help prepare the rape kit for the victim, the narrative ties back to Jo's recent encounter with her mother, who was herself a rape survivor. As the victim Abby is persuaded to believe that her trauma was by no means her own fault, she transforms from a victim into a survivor; thus from acute pain, there emerges the hint of hope and victory over the most haunting tragedies in one's life. The scene where the women at Grey Sloan stand united to offer psychological support to Abby as she is taken into surgery is a rare gem in the history of the show.

5 Sweetest: Ep 8. "Blowing In The Wind"

Seattle is hit by a major wind storm, which leaves Grey Sloan inundated with patients who have suffered massive injuries such as impalements. True to the inimitable style of Grey's, the heart can be broken, yet filled with love at the same time.

Levi Schmitt and the surly Nico have a rather intense and extremely passionate moment as the two get caught in the wind storm, seek refuge in an ambulance left outside, and then end up sleeping together for the first time. For the shy Levi, this is definitely a turning point. Alex and Jo also get stranded due to the storm and have a few cute moments together.

4 Saddest: Ep 9. "Shelter From The Storm"

Cece had been a patient at Grey Sloan from the beginning of the season, and most of the staff had come to love her. As Grey Sloan suffers a major power cut following the devastating wind storm, the heart that is procured for Cece's transplantation arrives at the OR late, and Cece finally calls it a day after having waited for the heart for so long.

As Cece had become quite a fan favorite, her death was heartbreaking, not just for the hospital staff but also for the audience. Moreover, Jackson finds out about his mother's cancer diagnosis which leaves him devastated, although Maggie supports him all the way through. The episode is harrowing like many Grey's episodes are, with a few lives saved and a few lost.

3 Sweetest: Ep 4. "Momma Knows Best"

Meredith going on a blind date after season 14's adorable debacle with Nathan Riggs was one of the sweetest moments in this season. And when her date turns out to be a mature, adorable Josh Radnor of How I Met Your Mother fame, it's naturally cuteness overload.

Although the date ends in disappointment, and fans are still holding a candle for software engineer Jon, there are also other sweet moments in the episode, such as when Maggie keeps obsessing over Jackson's disappearance and although she is unable to save her patient, she develops a beautiful bond with the latter's young son which is heartwarming to watch.

2 Saddest: Ep 11. "The Winner Takes It All"

Meredith Grey's life has been one big spate of horrifying tragedies that have only made her stronger. In this season she finds out that her father, Thatcher, with whom she had always had a rocky relationship, was terminally ill. She hesitates at first but then pushes aside her differences and visits him to bid him farewell.

Thatcher passes away in front of Meredith after the two finally have a heart to heart, years after young Lexie's tragic death. Although Thatcher had never been a part of Meredith's life as such, it is difficult to watch her come to terms with another tragedy.

1 Sweetest: Ep 12. "Girlfriend In A Coma"

A beautiful Christmas, New Year's and Valentine's Day episode all wrapped into one, this is one of those Grey's episodes with love, longing and hope in the air. Owen and Teddy enjoy the snow as Owen stares adoringly at the future mother of his child, while Meredith is maneuvering her way around two handsome men, Andrew and Link, both of whom seem interested in her.

There are also other sweet moments between Richard and Catherine, Ben and Miranda. But the sweetest, most romantic thing about this episode is the couple Garret and Natasha. The latter had been in a coma for a month but that didn't deter her boyfriend from spending all his time with her. On Valentine's Day, the couple decides that Natasha be taken off the vent, which is profoundly sad but also made desperately sweet when the doctors give them a wedding under the stars, with their phone lights turned on inside a dark hospital room.
