How King Of The Monsters Set Up Kong's Telepathic Powers In Godzilla vs Kong

Kong having telepathic powers in Godzilla vs. Kong is an idea that was actually set up in the credits of Godzilla: King of the Monsters. The trailer for the upcoming MonsterVerse film revealed that Kong is able to communicate with a young child.

The beginning of the Godzilla vs. Kong trailer introduces Jia (Kayle Hottie), a girl who appears to be an orphan. According to Rebecca Hall’s MonsterVerse character, Jia is the only person Kong will communicate with, and that due to their connection, Kong has become the child’s self-appointed protector. It could be that the relationship they share in the movie is on a telepathic level.

It’s not unprecedented in Godzilla movies for humans to have this ability. Miki Saegusa (Megumi Odaka) was able to hear Godzilla’s thoughts in the Heisei series. The possibility of humans also sharing this power in the MonsterVerse was teased in Godzilla: King of the Monsters. In the credits’ redacted text, it was mentioned that ancient humans “may have developed methods of telepathic communication with the creatures”. It’s known from King of the Monsters director Mike Dougherty that humans could connect with Titans through music, but apparently telepathy was another way of speaking with them. It’s possible that ancient civilizations had humans amongst them who could reach the Titans with their minds.

Based on what’s known about the ancient Titan War, it could be that this ability is what started it all in the first place. It was said in the credits that humans tried to control the Titans (presumably with their telepathic powers) and use them as weapons of war. That’s when their peaceful relationship fell apart and the Titans began to rebel against their masters.

Like the Titans and humans from thousands of years ago, Kong and Jia may possess the capability to communicate with each other telepathically. Hopefully though, Monarch won’t repeat the mistakes of the civilizations that came before them by abusing Jia’s link to Kong. It does look like Monarch will indeed be relying on her link with Kong to accomplish their mission, but they could cause a great deal of trouble if they go too far with that. For right now, it looks like Monarch’s plan is for Kong to protect the world against an unnamed threat, but they could risk more problems if they ever try to force Kong into doing things that go against his nature. Instead, they can just have Jia tell Kong whenever danger is present.

Regardless of how telepathy plays into Monarch’s long-term goals, it’s become apparent that what Kong has with Jia will be one the movie’s most important relationships. Keeping her safe from harm could help motivate Kong to succeed when he faces off against the current King of the Monsters, the two winged Titans, and any other villains that may be hiding in Godzilla vs. Kong.
