LG unveiled a new line of Gram laptops ahead of the start of CES 2021. The latest ultra-portable laptops come with many standard upgrades that one would expect with a next-generation machine, such as processor and battery life. However, there is one key difference that's specifically worth being aware of, the aspect ratio.
LG released the first Gram laptops in 2015 with 13.3 and 14-inch versions that each weighed just 2.1 pounds. Some of the main selling points of these laptops was their large screens, long battery life and lightweight design. More recently, LG released newer Gram laptops in 14, 15.6, and 17-inch screen sizes, equipped with a 10th-generation Intel Core processor, and weighing less than three pounds. They also feature a 1920 x 1080 resolution, 16:9 aspect ratio, and provide up to 17 hours of battery life.
LG's new Gram laptops for 2021 come with 14, 16, and 17-inch screens. The two smaller sizes will also be available as 2-in-1 versions. The resolution for the two larger laptops is 2560 x 1600, and 1920 x 1200 on the 14 models. Each laptop is also powered by an 11th-generation Intel Core processor, and except for the Gram 16 2-in-1, also remain below three pounds in weight. Battery life has also been extended to up to 19.5 hours, according to TechRadar. Pricing and release dates have yet to be confirmed, but more details are expected to be announced through LG's CES Virtual Showroom between January 11 and 14. However, the most noteworthy difference is the 16:10 aspect ratio.
An eleven-percent increase in screen height might not seem like much, but it could benefit Gram owners in multiple ways. While the typical 16:9 ratio on most computers today is great for widescreen video output, it is not ideal for productivity, making it inconvenient to those that want to get the most from work-related apps. When using spreadsheets, notepads, and other applications, more space on the screen means there is more to see and work with. The extra height can also make multitasking and working with multiple windows more tolerable. The 4:3 ratio of old computers had the right idea for productivity, and fortunately, LG is moving slightly back in that direction, while still offering displays that are great for widescreen video.
Although Microsoft, Apple, and other companies manufacture 16:10 and 3:2 laptops, most of them do not compare with the LG Gram series in terms of weight, battery life, or both. This is especially true with these new LG laptops as their specs are even more impressive. For instance, Microsoft Surface laptops haven't had a great history with battery life, and the recent 16-inch MacBook Pro drew criticism for its heft. As other branded 2021 laptops have yet to be announced, LG is already making its case to consumers with its latest Gram options.
