Is Rust Cross-Platform | Screen Rant

Online survival game Rust was first released in early access in 2013 but it has seen a resurgence of popularity on Twitch thanks to a group of celebrity streamers who have flocked back to its servers. The title has been the most-viewed game on the live-streaming platform for the first week of 2021 thanks to the hundreds of thousands of users who tune into watch streamers trek across the game's 100-player lobbies. All of this excitement has led gamers to wonder if it supports cross-platform play?

Developer Facepunch Studios first launched Rust on Steam in 2013 where it has long remained a PC exclusive, but that started to change in 2019. The studio announced that it would release a console version of Rust for PlayStation and Xbox systems in 2020. Unfortunately, plans for that major addition to the title were pushed back to an unspecified date in 2021 due to the workflow interruptions caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

Even with those bumps in the road, Facepunch has shipped regular updates to its release. Most recently, three new fishing villages were added to Rust where player can buy all sorts of sea-faring gear and tools. Facepunch keeps the survival title interesting by throwing new crafting blueprints and items into the fray, which players can slowly gather resources to construct and bolster their forts. Even with a steady stream of new content, users have been itching to know if Rust will eventually let them play with friends across various gaming platforms.

Currently, Rust is only available for PC, so it does not support cross-platform play because it's simply on one platform. But that could change once the PlayStation and Xbox versions of Rust are released. Facepunch has never specifically mentioned that it would include cross-platform play but similar games have incorporated the feature in the past, which means the developer could try to do the same.

Other survival titles like ARK: Survival EvolvedState of Decay 2, and Astroneer all support Xbox-to-PC cross-play, while popular battle royale titles like Fortnite and PlayersUnknown's Battlegrounds all support cross-play between Xbox to PlayStation. However, one of Rust's biggest competitors, the zombie apocalypse survival game DayZ, doesn't support the feature, even though it's available on PlayStation, Xbox, and Windows systems.

It's too early to tell if Facepunch will follow down the same path. It's possible that the developer will eventually implement cross-play in Rust to distinguish itself from DayZ, but that remains to be seen. The company teased that it will have more news about the console release of Rust sometime in 2021, so fans will need to wait for that upcoming announcement to learn anything concrete.
