LG has long been one of the pioneers in TV technology, and that hasn't changed despite CES 2021 being a completely virtual event. The well-known electronics brand has announced several new models for the new year, as well as some intriguing new display technologies. More than ever before, LG seems to have built a lineup of TVs with a little something for everyone.
LG Electronics was founded in 1958, and has been a leading name in TVs, home appliances and mobile devices for years. The company's OLED displays have been among the best TVs available on the market, as well as some of the more expensive. To offset those high-end models, LG has traditionally rounded out its roster with moderately-priced TVs that appeal to a greater range of potential buyers. Now, it looks like LG may be on the verge of finding a balance between the heavy hitters and value picks in its lineup.
Among the new 4K (and 8K) TVs announced by LG are its flagship C1 model - which will be available in a massive 83-inch size - as well as a new line of TVs featuring QNED displays that combine Quantum NanoCell color technology with mini LED backlighting to produce impressive color accuracy and improved contrast when watching movies and TV shows. LG wasn't finished with its CES offerings there, as it also beefed up the brightness for its line of Nano LED TVs. Compared to last year's LG OLED displays, which had a brightness of about 800 nits, the new Nano Evo models by LG claim to be able to hit an incredibly bright 3,000 nits.
It's hard to make any concrete determinations right now, since LG traditionally doesn't give away full pricing details until well after CES has come to an end. However, general inferences can be mad. For instance, the C1 will likely be among LG's more expensive models while displays like the Nano80 will likely be price-friendlier options for those interested in buying into the LG brand. Without any real pricing details to work with, finding the right model in LG's expansive new collection of TVs comes down to matching features with needs.
LG's OLEDs typically offer some of the best black levels on the market, and make great options for avid movie watchers. This year, LG has introduced an "evo" panel to several of its OLED models in an effort to help brightness levels stack up more evenly to the displays' historically impressive, detailed darker scenes. If these evo panels solve one of OLED TVs' few issues - a lack of brightness compared to other types of displays - then it might make this kind of technology even more appealing. Especially if these panels make their way to LG's most affordable OLED model for 2021, the A1.
For guaranteed better brightness, though, consumers would likely be better off with one of LG's NanoCell or QNED displays. They tend to excel just as well in well-lit living rooms as they do in darkened theater environments. Better yet, LG is making some ridiculously big models for 2021, with both the Nano90 and Nano80 models set to become available in 86-inch editions this year. For those who really want to break the bank, the Nano9Z 8K model tops out at 86 inches as well. Either way, even though LG is known for its OLEDs at this point, the rest of its 2021 TV offerings seem chalked full of intriguing technology that would fit right into living rooms everywhere.
