The OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro smartphones won’t come with a periscope lens, according to the latest leak. If the information is correct, then it is likely these smartphones will be at a disadvantage when it comes to zoom capabilities. It also might be a way for OnePlus to keep costs low as it continues to battle with the major smartphone players lowering their own prices.
OnePlus has always been a popular option for those who want to save on the cost of a smartphone, but not necessarily compromise on the features they want most. However, the last year has seen companies like Apple and Samsung introduce additional models to their premium lines. While these models do come with some compromises compared to their sibling devices, they have also helped to lower the entry cost of premium phones overall.
As part of the slow trickle of information and leaks that come through prior to the release of any new smartphone, it is now being suggested that the OnePlus 9 series won’t come with a periscope lens. The information came in Tweet form from tipster Max Jambor, although it didn’t provide any additional information on what else the OnePlus 9 series camera setups will (or won’t) come with. While the lack of a periscope lens on the standard OnePlus 9 might not come as much of a surprise, the absence on the Pro model is likely to raise some concerns, even though it is still likely to feature a telephoto camera.
For users who don’t often turn to the periscope camera, it won’t matter that it's not included, providing they are not using one without realizing it. Essentially, the periscope camera allows smartphones to zoom to much greater depths than what would otherwise be possible, even with traditional telephoto cameras. Periscope solutions are particularly useful in this respect as they don’t compromise in other areas quite as much, such as the thickness of the device.
Arguably, this is one of the more important advancements that have hit smartphone cameras in recent years. So much so that many smartphone manufacturers have now turned to this type of solution with their latest premium devices, including both Huawei and Samsung. While Apple is a notable exception in this respect, even the iPhone-maker has been linked with rumors suggesting periscope lenses are on the way. However, with the latest rumor now pointing to the lack of periscope lens on the OnePlus 9 series, these phones are likely to arrive at a disadvantage compared to the competition. That’s not only in terms of the zoom capabilities, but also as a reason for consumers to opt for a OnePlus phone over others.
