Pokémon GO Level Cap Glitch Reset Trainers' Progress

A newly discovered glitch in Pokémon GO makes it so that players can't clear the hurdle to level 49, and therefore cannot reach the level 50 cap. The level 50 cap was only introduced last year along with the arrival of gen 6 Pokémon, which might explain the presence of a bug.

When Pokémon GO was first launched, the level cap was at 40. Getting to that point was and still is considered a bit grindy, as it requires obtaining lots of exp from the game. This was done by catching Pokémon, visiting PokéStops, and just generally playing the game. Getting to a higher level grants all sorts of benefits, such as usually being the first group to test out new updates in the game. The level cap was upped to level 50 in 2020, and getting to level 50 requires doing a considerable amount of in-game tasks such as trading Pokémon or giving gifts to trainers. The level cap update also increased the amount of experience earned from the game, making it easier to get to level 40.

However, some players have reported a new glitch that resets their progress towards reaching level 49. Lauren Bertoni and FleeceKing posted that trainers who reached level 48 today had their progress reset, with FleeceKing claiming that the 100 gifts they sent to reach level 49 were erased from the progression bar. Niantic Support's response was to request that the affected players DM their trainer's nickname and email address so that the company could look into the situation. Other replies agreed that this glitch needed to be fixed ASAP.

With how much grinding is necessary to reach the upper levels in Pokémon GO, it doesn't help that getting exp is harder these days due to having to stay inside. While Niantic did introduce some measures to accommodate for the pandemic last year, some of those measures were later taken away, which might explain why some are trying to go outside to play Pokémon GO. 2020 was still Pokémon GO's most successful year regardless, and it remains to be seen if that hot streak will continue on through 2021. The state of Pokémon GO is wholly dependent on how long the pandemic will continue to last.

But regardless of how 2021 will turn out for the game, encountering a glitch like this is nothing sort of obnoxious. While it thankfully doesn't reset trainers' progress all the way back to level 1, this can still prevent players from reaching level 50 if this glitch were to loop again and again. Hopefully Niantic swiftly responds to this annoyance of this glitch in Pokémon GO.
