Each season of Sons of Anarchy had a different menace that the club had to deal with, and in season 2 they came across a group of white separatists led by Ethan Zobelle, but what happened to him after season 2? Created by Kurt Sutter, the action drama TV series Sons of Anarchy premiered on FX in 2008 and came to an end in 2014 after seven seasons full of action, betrayal, tragedy, and a lot of blood. Sons of Anarchy was very well-received by critics and viewers from beginning to end, with special praise on the stories and performances of the main cast, particularly that of Katey Sagal as Gemma Teller-Morrow.
Sons of Anarchy tells the story of Jackson “Jax” Teller (Charlie Hunnam), VP of the motorcycle club Sons of Anarchy, set in the fictional town of Charming, California. The events of the series are kickstarted when Jax finds a manifesto written by his late father, John Teller, one of the founding members of the club. This leads Jax to question the club’s motivations and goals, his relationships, family, and himself. As mentioned above, the MC came across a lot of obstacles over the course of seven seasons, such as rival clubs and other threats that didn’t last more than one season, as was the case of Ethan Zobelle (Adam Arkin).
Zobelle was introduced in season 2 as a newly arrived businessman and owner of Impeccable Smokes, a cigar shop on Charming’s Main Street. However, Zobelle had other plans, and through L.O.A.N. (League of American Nationalists), an organization allied with the Aryan Brotherhood, he tried to take over Charming and force SAMCRO out. Zobelle’s right hand, A.J. Weston (Henry Rollins), was killed by the Sons as well as other members of his dangerous organization, including his daughter, Polly (Sarah Jones), who was shot by Gemma. Unlike all of them, Zobelle made it out of Charming without any major injuries, and his fate was left unknown.
However, some fans believe there might have been a hidden answer about Zobelle’s life post-Charming in season 3, specifically in the first episode, “SO”. In it, Gemma is staying at a motel as she's on the run after shooting Polly and being framed for murder by Agent Stahl, who was there too and killed Polly's boyfriend, Edmond Hayes. At the motel room, she has the TV on and the news show a report about a plane crash while she reads the newspaper with a look of recognition, though what she saw wasn't fully shown on screen. Fans, then, have theorized that the news she was shocked to read was that Zobelle died in the plane crash, which fans link to Zobelle booking a flight to leave California. While Sutter hasn’t confirmed or denied if Zobelle died in that specific plane crash or not, he did say why he let him get away, explaining that sometimes “sh*tty people live and the bad guy wins”.
Other fans believe that the news Gemma read on the paper was about the deaths of Polly Zobelle and company, while others think it was about the kidnapping of Jax's son, Abel, but Gemma didn't learn about it until much later in season 3. All this leaves Zobelle’s fate after Sons of Anarchy open to interpretation, so fans can either choose to believe he died in that plane crash, sometime later, or that he got away with everything he did.
