The new The Bachelor lead, Matt James, has the support of his family as he goes on his journey to find his wife.
For many fans Monday nights premiere episode was the first time meeting Matt as he has never been on a previous Bachelor franchise show. Other fans may recognize him as the best of former Bachelorette runner-up, Tyler Cameron. He was set to compete for Clare Crawley's heart this past summer after being nominated by Tyler's late mother, but ABC opted to make him the lead instead. Matt went from being a friend of Bachelor Nation to staring in his very own season.
During Monday night's episode, the 28-year-old spoke a little bit about his childhood and what it was like from him growing up in a biracial family. Matt grew up with his mom, Patty James, and his brother, John, in North Carolina, reported Us Weekly. His father was absent most of their lives after his parents split up when he was very young. “He was always drawn to families where the mom and dad were together,” his mother revealed in a June 2019 interview while talking about his work with ABC Food Tours charity. “I am so proud of him. He overcame everything and he wants to be a role model for these kids.” Although it seems Matt and his father are no longer on speaking terms as of 2020. On Father's Day, he shouted out single mothers who are playing the part of both mom and dad in their children's lives. He shared a photo of him and his mom, wishing her a happy Fathers Day alongside a Bible verse to fit the occasion.
Matt also grew up very religious, which has already been seen in the first episode when he got all the women to pray with him before they kicked off the night. “He’s a Christian and I think that’s something that’s important to all Christians or people of faith,” a source revealed to the publication. “I think he’s definitely focused on the traditional way of starting a family.” Matt has never been a womanizer and is really focused on finding a fiance who will not only love him, but his family too. He is looking for someone who “he can bring home to his mom," another Us Weekly source admitted. He wants a women who is smart, has a sense of humor and care about their physical and mental well-being. As for future children, that is something Matt definitely sees in his future. His mother has already begun a counter for how many grandkids he wants. “She wants a basketball team! I’ll have a minivan, that’s the max," Matt said during an episode of The Bachelor: The Greatest Seasons — Ever.
While on his journey to finding the one, Matt will always have his family behind him cheering him on.
