The X-Men Are Reaching Out To Readers, Literally | Screen Rant

Warning! Spoilers ahead for New Mutants #14 from Vita Ayala and Rod Reis

In the latest issue of Marvel Comics' New MutantsMagik, Dani Moonstar, Wolfsbane, and the rest of team have taken it upon themselves to train and guide the next generation of mutants on the island nation of Krakoa. Not only that, but the issue itself also provides readers with a cool interactive feature, inviting fans to partake and make use of the same writing prompts the New Mutants themselves are given while teaching the younger gemeration of mutants.

In New Mutants #14, the team decides to make Krakoa a better place by filling a void, acting as mentors and authority figures to the younger mutants present on the island. The issue from Vita Ayala and Rod Reis sees the team breaking the children into groups, helping them control and grow in their mutant powers and abilities. Not only that, but the New Mutants also show them how to create synergy with their powers and those of other mutants, using to teamwork to great effect. For example, Magik and Dani Moonstar can combine their powers for mirage projection, expanding their range using teleportation disks; while Warpath and Warlock can combine to create a psychically shielded bio-mechanical suit of armor to pack a major punch.

Then, at the end of the issue, readers are able to take a look at a letter from Dani Moonstar to Warpath. While she knows he didn't sign up to be a teacher, Moonstar believes that James Proudstar can be more and do more for Krakoa than just serving as a strong warrior. According to Dani, Warpath is a good man and great friend, which is why she thinks he would be such a great role model for the younger mutants on the island. In that spirit, she includes a list of writing prompts she's asking him and the other New Mutants to explore and write about in journals. This way, they can know themselves better in order to better help the kids. The list itself is also included at the end of the issue, and it's pretty clear that it's there for readers to enjoy and use as well.

Many of these prompts are quite intriguing and seem as though they'd be really engaging concepts to think and write about, such as the one that asks for five songs that are the most moving for someone, or the one that asks for a list to be created of small changes and commitments one could make in their routine to help better themselves in the long run. While Moonstar herself admits that some of them are hokey, she intends for them to serve as jumping off points for deeper inward exploration for her teammates overall.

This isn't the first time New Mutants has offered readers with some sort of fun interactive component. Back in New Mutants #7readers were given rules to a dice game that actually determined the winners of the battle the New Mutants had with warriors of the alien Shi'ar Empire. Elements like this that go beyond the average content for readers is pretty cool and a fun bonus for the series, and only adds to the overall entertainment value. Here's hoping more interactive features make their way in future issues from Marvel Comics.
