Thor: Ragnarok is One of the Best Marvel Movies, According to Patty Jenkins

Wonder Woman 1984 director Patty Jenkins believes Taika Waititi's colorful Thor: Ragnarok is one of the best Marvel movies of all time. Jenkins stepped into the superhero realm when she signed on to direct Wonder Woman, the first DCEU film centered on Diana Prince (Gal Gadot). Wonder Woman proved to be a massive hit with audiences and at the box office, so it was no surprise that Jenkins was asked to return for its sequel. Wonder Woman 1984, after numerous delays, finally debuted last weekend, and Jenkins is already confirmed to return for Wonder Woman 3.

Chris Hemsworth's Thor already had two solo movies under his belt by the time Ragnarok came around. The first was directed by Kenneth Branagh, while Alan Taylor took over for Thor: The Dark World. Neither of those installments were met with particularly glowing praise, especially in the case of The Dark World, which is often regarded as one of the worst MCU installments. Waititi gave the franchise a shot of adrenaline when he directed Ragnarok, which stripped Thor down in nearly every way and reinvented the property to great success.

Waititi's excellent work on Ragnarok has not gone unnoticed by those within Hollywood, and Jenkins has now contributed her praise. While appearing on the podcast WTF with Marc Maron, Jenkins had the opportunity to share her thoughts on Ragnarok and Waititi's filmmaking. Unsurprisingly, they're very, very positive. Jenkins said:

[Ragnarok] was such a good movie. I'm actually so grateful that Thor found Taika because Taika is the most genius fit for Thor of all time. It's amazing. Thor: Ragnarok is one of the best Marvel movies of all time, it's so good. That movie is pure joy, and so well executed… It's not gonna matter [if you're not into superhero movies]. Taika is a great filmmaker, and he just made a great film.

That Jenkins would enjoy Ragnarok so much is particularly fun since she almost directed The Dark World. She was attached to the project for a time before Taylor, but later stepped away. Jenkins explained that she left The Dark World because she did not wish to be blamed for its failure. Nevertheless, she still seems to be grateful for the almost-opportunity, as she said on the podcast, "And to Marvel's credit, [they hired me] on a movie that did not require a woman at all, so I've always been super grateful to them even though it didn't work out." While it might have been interesting to see Jenkins' take on The Dark World, it's understandable why she turned it down. Plus, it might have ultimately been what allowed her to direct Wonder Woman.

Ragnarok is widely considered the best Thor movie and one of the best MCU projects overall. This is largely because of its side-splitting humor, incredible supporting characters, and how it reframes Thor's character. Waititi will be back for Thor: Love and Thunder, the first time an MCU hero will receive a fourth solo adventure. Hopefully, he'll bring the same energy to that one, particularly since it will feature the fan favorite storyline that sees Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) become the Mighty Thor. Waititi has quite the track record when it comes to his films, so expectations are certainly high. It's just a shame it's still well over a year away.
