In a series of unprecedented events, a player found two of the same never-before-seen Shiny Pokémon in the GameCube title Pokémon Colosseum within 10 minutes of one another. However, due to the way the Pokémon appeared in-game, the player was not able to catch either historic Pokémon during the encounters.
Shiny Pokémon can be difficult to find, and Pokémon Colosseum is one of the hardest and tedious games to Shiny Hunt in. While mainline Pokémon titles offer players a plethora of methods to go Shiny hunting, most of which allow for tens of encounters every minute, Pokémon Colosseum only has a handful of Pokémon that can appear Shiny and an even smaller amount that can be caught. Not to mention, each encounter can take a few minutes to set up making Pokémon in Pokémon Colosseum the most arduous to hunt. Yet, some Shiny hunting masochists endure these monotonous hunts to wear a badge only a few will obtain.
In Pokémon Colosseum, there are 51 Shadow Pokémon that can be Shiny hunted. While it is a known fact that these can appear Shiny, there are still a few that have never been found. One of them was Hitmontop, the pre-evolution of Hitmonlee and Hitmonchan. However, Shiny hunter 1yoshi79 found two uncatchable versions of the Shiny Hitmontop during a live stream on YouTube within 2 encounters. This is the first time in Pokémon Colosseum's history that a player has found a Shiny Hitmontop catchable or uncatchable. But if it appeared Shiny, why wasn't he able to catch it?
Pokémon Colosseum is unique in more ways than one, and that includes how players check to see if a Pokémon is Shiny. Unlike mainline games, players can only catch Shadow Pokémon which belong to the bad-guy players. While they may not appear Shiny when they are tossed into battle, players have to catch the Shadow Pokémon and then check to see if they're Shiny. So, although 1yoshi79 encountered two Shiny Hitmontops in battle, when he caught them they were no longer Shiny. This is because a Pokémon in Pokémon Colosseum determines whether it is Shiny only after it has been caught.
Yes, what happened to 1yoshi79 is one of the most frustrating things that can happen to a normal Shiny hunter, but on the bright side, his misfortunate encounter made Pokémon history. Not to mention that one day prior to this historic moment, two other trainers made history by finding a Shiny Wishmake Jirachi which is an even more strenuous hunt. With 2021 being Pokémon's 25th Anniversary, the community is getting an early start on celebrating one of the world's most beloved franchises.
