WandaVision will reveal what happened to the character of Monica Rambeau since Captain Marvel. Set in 1995, Captain Marvel introduced viewers to the 11-year-old Monica Rambeau, played by Akira Akbar. Comic book readers were thrilled because they recognized the name; in the comics, Monica Rambeau is one of the many other superheroes to briefly call themselves Captain Marvel before Carol Danvers claimed the identity. She's also one of Marvel's most powerful heroes.
Captain Marvel is essentially a prequel to the MCU - it even provides an origin story for the "Avengers" team-name - and as a result, viewers assumed this was setup for Monica's MCU future. The character would have been 28 during the Chitauri invasion of New York in The Avengers, and she would have been 34 when Thanos snapped his fingers in Avengers: Infinity War and erased half the life in the universe. Now she's returning in WandaVision, with the adult Monica Rambeau played by Teyonah Parris.
Speaking at the WandaVision press conference, Teyonah Parris confirmed WandaVision will explore exactly what her character has been doing all these years. According to Parris, Monica Rambeau has been profoundly affected by other events in the history of the MCU.
"Basically, in WandaVision, we pick up with who she is now as a grown woman. Through the course of the show we find out what she's been up to, what's happened to her in that gap. We will get to see Monica join Carol Danvers, Captain Marvel and Ms. Marvel in Captain Marvel 2!"
"[Monica has] definitely been through some things and seen some things. We actually do get to learn, particularly, what those things are that Monica has seen and gone through and how they have shaped her life. I don't want to give too much away because we will actually touch a lot of that as we go through the show."
The comment is an intriguing one, and Parris' reluctance to make any specific comments suggests some key moments in the MCU had a profoundly personal effect on Monica. It's reasonable to assume Thanos' snapping of his fingers was one such moment, given half the life in the universe was erased. It's impossible to say whether Monica was one of the people "Blipped" out of existence or whether she had to survive without loved ones; either scenario would have been pretty traumatic.
One thing is certain about Monica Rambeau's story; it ultimately led her to SWORD, an organization dedicated to protecting the Earth from extraterrestrial threats. No doubt Monica's childhood experience with Captain Marvel meant she was perfectly suited to this role. It's even possible she has kept in touch with Carol Danvers over the decades, and therefore has a deep understanding of life out in the stars. But it's anybody's guess why an organization like SWORD would be interested in the Scarlet Witch's reality bubbles, a distinctly Terrestrial issue. This mystery will hopefully be answered shortly in the first episodes of WandaVision.
