WandaVision's Teyonah Parris, who plays Monica Rambeau on the new Disney+ show, isn't sure if her character becomes Captain Marvel in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Monica made her debut in episode 2, but under a different name. Initially, Monica goes by Geraldine and her neighbors are quite suspicious of her. In WandaVision episode three, titled "Now In Color," Monica talks Scarlet Witch through her whirlwind pregnancy after stumbling upon her in the throes of an unusual time warp.
Eventually, Scarlet Witch gives birth to twins, eliciting deeply buried memories from the character. Wanda finally acknowledges her past, nodding to the fact she herself is a twin and that she had a brother named Pietro. When Monica brings this fact up, Scarlet Witch is perturbed and, in an unseen moment, ejects Monica from Westview. Monica's role in WandaVision going forward is as unclear as her reason for being in Westview, and it seems that extends to the actress herself.
Parris has played extremely coy when it comes to her involvement in the MCU, and now she's told Variety she's not even sure which hero she'll play in the future. When asked if she would be taking on the mantle of Captain Marvel, Parris revealed she has no idea. She also said that, because Monica Rambeau goes on to play several different heroes in the comics, she's as in the dark as fans are:
Monica Rambeau has held many monikers over the decades and I think they’ve all been really special in a very particular way. I don’t know how or who she will be in the MCU. Because when I tell you, she changes names and she kicks butt in all of them. So, I don’t know who she will be in her superhero form. But I am excited by the thought of many of them.
Monica's presence in Westview is still lacking a proper explanation, and what she'll be doing going forward is a mystery. She clearly works for S.W.O.R.D., but what that entails remains clouded in secrecy. WandaVision episode three gave viewers their biggest look yet at the world beyond Westview, and that seems to be just the beginning. The show is set to explain what Monica was up to between Captain Marvel and WandaVision, which takes place directly after Avengers: Endgame.
Parris is slated to appear in Captain Marvel 2, but the actress herself has yet to see a script. While Monica taking over the role of Captain Marvel would be an exciting development, it seems unlikely at this stage. In the comics, Monica has played the role of several heroes, including Photon, Pulsar, and Spectrum. It feels more likely that, before she takes over for Carol Danvers, she will operate under one of those monikers. Brie Larson, who plays Carol, only joined the MCU in 2019, and it seems as if the franchise isn't finished with her story quite yet. WandaVision has a lot of explaining to do, but it sounds like Monica's future as a hero isn't one of the mysteries they'll be solving during the show's run.
