What Destiny 2 Fans Still Don't Know About The Exo Stranger

The confounding story of Destiny 2 has finally started to make sense in recent months, thanks to the arrival of its long-unseen threat, the Darkness, and the return an infamously mysterious character, the Exo Stranger. The Stranger, now officially confirmed to be prominent lore character Elsie Bray, was a notorious symbol of Destiny 1's barebones story, telling players, "I don't even have time to explain why I don't have time to explain." Her return brought fans some answers, but many elements of the Exo Stranger's story in Destiny 2 are still a mystery.

Observing players' Guardians throughout Destiny 1, the Stranger is an enigmatic time traveler who comes from a timeline where the Darkness defeated the Traveler and the Light. In Beyond Light, she shows herself again, calling Eris Morn, the Drifter, and players' Guardians to Europa in order to learn how to harness Destiny 2's freezing Stasis powers to defeat the Darkness.

Players learn much of the Stranger's past as Elsie, granddaughter of vile scientist Clovis Bray, of her many failed attempts to stop humanity from succumbing to the Darkness, and of the potential role of Guardians and Stasis in finally winning that struggle. But the details of what set her on her time-hopping mission remain unclear. In the coming seasons, Bungie still has a number of questions to answer about Destiny 2's Exo Stranger.

What Is The Exo Stranger's Ghost-Like "Fish" Companion?

Although Elsie had time to explain a lot in Destiny 2: Beyond Light, fans never got an explanation of her floating, fish-like companion. In fact, it never even showed up in-game, only appearing in the Darkness Ziggurat's introductory cutscene. One of Ghost's in-game voice lines confirms the fish is "not a Ghost," adding that the Stranger seems to be playing its identity close to the chest. In a June 2020 interview with streamer DrLupo, game director Luke Smith implied players will learn more about Elsie's companion - and maybe even obtain one like it themselves - in a future year.

Who Is The Exo Stranger Talking To In Destiny 1?

When she met the player's Guardian on Venus in Destiny 1, Elsie spoke to someone over a communications device, telling them, among other things, to "Hold position, kill the engines, and don't let them find you." Since this implies it's someone accompanying Elsie and controlling her ship, the person on the other end is most likely the "fish," as she hasn't been seen with any other traveling companions (besides, very recently, Eris and the Drifter). That said, it could also be some kind of larger, time-traveling resistance effort, of which the Exo Stranger is the leader - or maybe even a time-hopping version of Eris or the Drifter.

How Exactly Does The Exo Stranger Time Travel?

Elsie says she comes from a timeline where the Darkness won, and the Lost Memory Fragment lore entries (via The Ishtar Collective) from Destiny 2's Warmind expansion imply she uses technology derived from the Vex to time travel, but the details of how this works are unclear. Is she actually traveling between timelines, or is she merely simulating them with pinpoint accuracy? And is there even a difference of consequence? Regardless, a dialogue-based explanation (as opposed to disjointed bits of lore) would do much to clarify how Destiny 2's Exo Stranger came to learn so much about the Darkness.
