X-Men: The Weirdest Version of Gambit Just Returned to Battle Doctor Doom

Marvel has brought back the weirdest version of Gambit in Chris Claremont Anniversary Special #1. While this version may not be immediately recognizable as the fan-favorite character, rest assured, it is indeed him—albeit a strange version of him. He is hard to recognize, but showing him with his family cements his identity with no doubts.

The character of Gambit was originally created by Chris Claremont in 1990, but there are multiple versions of the character. Some of these, including the one present in Chris Claremont Anniversary Special #1, were bizarre, but were also created by Claremont. Different Remy LeBeaus have been found on multiple iterations of Earth, including the mainstream Earth-616 and others such as the one seen in Old Man Logan (Earth-807128). Where does this Remy hail from?

Chris Claremont Anniversary Special #1 brings back Remy from Earth-6706 for a brief appearance during a fight between different versions of the Fantastic Four and Doctor Doom. This version of Earth was struck by meteors, causing the Fantastic Four to never form and the topography of the planet to be significantly different. While in space, the shuttle that Reed Richards, Sue Storm, Johnny Storm, and Ben Grimm were on is hit, plummets to Earth, and falls into the ocean. Sue Storm is the only survivor, saved by Namor, the king of Atlantis. The two start a family together and their first-born son is Remy, who is eventually known to everyone as Gambit. This makes Gambit the Lord Prince of Atlantis.

Atlantean Prince Gambit is not the only child that Sue Storm and Namor had together. Gambit is the first born out of five total children. He has three sisters and a brother. His youngest sister and brother are twins. These are the children that he is holding in one panel of the Chris Claremont Anniversary Special while saying, "Don't worry, twins." This iteration of Gambit can fly using telekinesis, create psionic force fields, and survive underwater. He also has super strength and telepathic abilities with aquatic creatures. He is basically a triple mash-up. He has the usual Gambit abilities, plus some bonus quirks courtesy of his parentage.

This version of Gambit is recruited by the New Exiles in Chris Claremont's run of New Exiles (2008). It is said that he takes more after his mother, because he wants to go from place to place. As the Lord Prince of Atlantis, this is frowned upon, but his younger sister, Valeria Fen, seems to take up the reins when it comes to taking care of Atlantis as a member of the royal family. This allows him to leave Earth-6706 and join the Exiles as a teammate.  With them, he helped to save other worlds in the Omniverse.

His appearance in Chris Claremont Anniversary Special #1 shows him doing what he was introduced doing in his first appearance as a character: protecting his siblings and being there for his family when they need him. While this particular Gambit is unlikely to be included in any current or future runs, he definitely has a place in the Claremont mash-up alongside some of the writer's other creations.
