All The Ways Netflix's Bling Empire Copied Crazy Rich Asians

The similarities between Netflix's Bling Empire and Crazy Rich Asians are hard to deny, leading many fans to wonder if the reality series copied the hit film. Bling Empire offers audiences a look at the luxe world of the wealthy Asian-American and American elite. It appears that Netflix did use the movie as a blueprint for its new reality show, which has been taking audiences by storm since its early 2021 debut. Netflix has spared no expense when it comes to Bling Empire, including Crazy Rich Asians-inspired lavish parties, fashions, and locales.

Take Anna Shay... the fair-haired Beverly Hills maven is a dead ringer for Crazy Rich Asians' Eleanor Young. True, Anna isn't a mother to any of the cast members, but she's certainly the grande dame of the series. Throughout Bling Empire season 1, she makes her rivalries clear and doesn't mince words, especially when it comes to what she expects from those that are permitted to enter her inner sanctum. Viewers figured that out when internationally renowned DJ Kim Lee came to her house, found a penis pump in her shower, and tossed it outside where guests could see it. This happened at Anna's garden party. Some Netflix fans think that Kim and her mother Kimmy Segal are like Rachel Chu and her mother in CRA. Lee is also similar to Araminta Lee from Crazy Rich Asians. Both are bubbly party girls and are relatively well-liked by all in their exclusive social circle.

Kim told NextShark in 2018: "[People] would call me a 'wannabe Kylie.' I think she's gorgeous, but people that know me would say I've been looking like this before Kylie became 'Kylie." See Kim Lee below:

Then there's the Andrew Gray/Kelly Mi Li/ Kevin Kreider love triangle. Kevin and Kelly are both Asian, gorgeous, and incredibly flirty with each other. Kevin would love to date Kelly, but she's in love with her spicy Latin actor beau, Andrew Gray, who played the Red Power Ranger. Will Kevin and Kelly prove to be Bling Empire's equivalent to Nick Young and Rachel Chu? Another blatantly obvious parallel between the two projects is Christine Chiu and her husband Dr. Gabriel Chiu. Along with their adorable son, "Baby G," this pair is very much like Astrid Leong-Teo and her husband, Michael. Some people may also say that Christine's photoshoot shenanigans call to mind Eddie Cheng and his lavish family photo shoots from Crazy Rich Asians. Finally, there's Kane Lim. Depending on whose storyline he wanders into, he either comes across as the hilarious sidekick Peik Lin (played by Awkafina) from Crazy Rich Asians or as the over-the-top, self-indulgent bachelor, Bernard Tai.

No matter how you slice it, Bling Empire and Crazy Rich Asians are very similar projects, which showcase the wealthy elite. Fans love Crazy Rich Asians' characters and Bling Empire's cast members. Viewers laugh with them, feel their pain, and love to watch them spend all that money on fabulous finery. If Netflix grants this series a second season, perhaps new members will be added to the cast, who remind fans of all the remaining and beloved Crazy Rich Asians characters.
