Reboots have become very common in today’s landscape and often due to the will to update or integrate modern values into an older series and a bit of banking on the popularity of the original series. Charmed has been met with such treatment, with the series proving popular for The CW and confirming the notion that reboots can find the same success that the originals had.
Charmed isn’t the only series that has accomplished this, though, as there are quite a few other shows that have followed the same formula. These are the ones that aren’t strictly sequel series but are their own thing and yet employ the thematic qualities of the original. Their success has been measured by critical acclaim and for their success in ratings and renewals for new seasons.
10 Charmed (2018 - )
The Vera sisters not only discover they have a half-sister they didn’t know about, but that they are supposed to be "The Charmed Ones," a powerful trio who must protect people from dark forces. While they have their individual powers, it’s together that they are at their strongest.
One of the things viewers can learn from Charmed is the value of family, which the reboot brings forward as well. The series has been a success due to it being representative of the times while retaining that magical charm the original introduced. The sisters have the right chemistry needed for fans to tune in for the long-run.
9 One Day At A Time (2017 - 2020)
In the new version of One Day at a Time, a Cuban-American family struggles to get by due to a combination of real-world issues and the matriarch's battle with PTSD. However, they quickly learn to adjust to their living situation and accept one another for all their flaws and quirks.
Due to its likable characters, this reboot was hugely successful when it comes to critical acclaim. While the general idea of surviving “one day at a time” remains the same as the original, the reboot is far more mature in tackling issues such as sexism, mental illness, and gender identity, which makes it walk a fine balance between comedy and drama.
8 The Twilight Zone (2019 - )
In The Twilight Zone, strange happenings occur to a number of people in various places, often with no valid explanation whatsoever. With no one having any clue how to deal with these phenomena, things can take disturbing turns very quickly.
A modern take on the classic series that has many essential must-watch episodes, the reboot has been successful in snagging big-name actors and placing their characters in situations that deal with moral themes. The new series has a particular scary twist that gives way for more creative storylines that both new and old fans will enjoy.
7 Saved By The Bell (2020 - )
Two decades after the initial high school students at Bayside High had their adventures, a new generation has arrived, comprising both rich and middle-class children. With some of the former students now adults and still around, there’s a lot more about this school waiting to be seen.
The reboot improves on the predecessor in some ways, including more social commentary, but a lot of wacky creative turns that allow the series to be a fun romp through the classic material. It’s been an instant success on streaming for not taking itself too seriously and bringing back the older characters in a justified manner.
6 Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina (2018 - 2020)
In the town of Greendale, Sabrina Spellman must find a way to keep her secret identity as a witch away from her friends, while constantly facing dark foes from the supernatural that keep stirring up to challenge Sabrina and her family.
Despite being a dark twist on the original, the reboot does have similarities, with Sabrina’s aunts even showing up. For the most part, however, this is a chilling tale that will please younger viewers, but also keep older ones hooked. It had a solid run on Netflix and fans found it a unique way to tell the story that originated with Archie Comics.
5 Lost In Space (2018 - 2021)
The Robinson family was on course to be among the families to colonize the Alpha Centauri star system when a breach forces them to land on a distant planet that has more dangers present than they are prepared to face.
The best thing about this reboot is how it sets up the following season in the previous one, offering viewers a hook to be invested in without indulging in needless cliffhangers. The scale of the series’ production is marvelous to behold, and a treat for the eyes that goes well with its quality storytelling.
4 MacGyver (2016 - )
A young government agent uses his skills as an engineer to figure out ways to fight crime without having to resort to lethal tactics. His tendency to think out of the box proves to be a game-changer that influences a change in crime-solving techniques.
While it’s never set the critics’ interest on fire, MacGyver has matched the success of the original in terms of audience reception and staying quality, seeing continually strong ratings. The show’s charm comes from the titular character, whose savvy attitude makes him hard to predict and a joy to watch.
3 Roswell, New Mexico (2018 - )
Liz Ortecho returns to Roswell and reconnects with a former flame, only to learn that he’s an alien whose roots are returning to threaten the town. Despite facing great adversity, she resolves to keep his secret safe and fight those that challenge them.
Fans of the original enjoyed the romantic aspects of the show, which the reboot continues, to bring the most popular aspect of Roswell forward. The reboot has proven to be so popular that it was renewed for its fourth season before the third even premiered, thanks to the return of these types of plot elements that the series excels in.
2 DuckTales (2017 - 2021)
Huey, Louie, and Dewey connect with their great uncle Scrooge when Donald is forced to make them meet. This begins a series of adventures that involves the Duck family, as they partake in mysteries and expeditions around the world.
The original cartoon remains a sentimental favorite for fans, which made the reboot so popular upon release, as it’s a great use of nostalgia. The new series takes a bolder approach when it comes to the sense of adventure for the characters, being fast-paced in quality and featuring more daring storylines.
1 Hawaii Five-0 (2010 - 2020)
A task force based in Hawaii is given the freedom to invoke justice by any means it deems necessary. With full immunity and resources, the team explores the many acts of crime rampant in the state and aims to weed out the bad guys.
Fans have generally found at least one episode in the series to be a standout, with Hawaii Five-O’s no-nonsense approach to crime-solving proving popular. The reboot lasted for a decade and spawned its own universe that includes MacGyver and Magnum P.I. and it also received praise for its updated look and feel when compared to the original series.
