Cruz previously commented on the news that Gina Carano was fired from the Disney+ Star Wars spin-off show The Mandalorian for making an offensive post to her Instagram that equated the persecution of Jewish people during the Holocaust to being a Republican in America today. Cruz defended Carano on Twitter, claiming in part, “Texan Gina Carano broke barriers in the Star Wars universe: not a princess, not a victim, not some emotionally tortured Jedi.” The “emotionally tortured Jedi” remark is a dig at the main heroine Rey, played by Daisy Ridley, in the most recent Star Wars sequel trilogy.
Speaking to Yahoo!, Ridley responded to Cruz’s dig at her character. She stated that she didn’t know about Cruz’s comments before the interview but is “very happy to be an emotionally tortured Jedi." The actress then took a verbal swing at the Senator, who has recently come under fire for going on vacation to Cancun while his constituents were surviving horrific conditions amidst the Texas blackouts.
“I did not know, and I am very happy to be an emotionally tortured Jedi who doesn’t leave their state when it’s having a terrible time.”
During Daisy Ridley’s tenure as the lightsaber-wielding hero, she also appeared in other films such as Murder on the Orient Express and Ophelia. Her upcoming film, Chaos Walking, will be her first major role since the Star Wars trilogy concluded. Ridley is part of a star-studded cast that includes Tom Holland, Mads Mikkelsen, Nick Jonas, and David Oyelowo. The film is based on a sci-fi novel trilogy and is directed by Doug Liman.
While more news surrounding Carano’s firing from The Mandalorian is continuing to come out, it is somewhat clear where mainstream Hollywood stands on the political divide. While one certainly can’t generalize, various entertainment industry members have taken the Trump administration and the current Republican Party to task, whether it be during appearances at awards ceremonies, acceptance speeches, interviews, or on their own social media pages. They show, just like Ridley does in the interview, that when it comes to political back-talk, they can go blow-for-blow—and the Star Wars actress definitely did not back down.
