Princess And The Frog is one of Disney's best Princess movies, and it is one that features an incredible soundtrack. The entire movie is based around New Orleans, and it does a fantastic job of showcasing that culture, through the food, the scenes, and most importantly, the music.
This movie is jam-packed with songs that have incredible energy, just as you'd expect at a Mardi Gras event. Jazz music is the theme throughout this one, which makes the soundtrack stand out from anything else that Disney has done. There's a great variety of songs, from big ensemble numbers, emotional songs, and a great villain's song, but which is the best?
9 "Down In New Orleans (Prologue)"
Taking place at the very start of the movie, this is the song that introduces the movie and gives a taste of what type of music is going to be taking place. It doesn't even last for 30 seconds, which makes it a very short number, but it certainly has an impact.
It just sets things up nicely and showcases the belief that the characters have. The fact that the vocals openly sing about how anything can happen shows that audiences can expect the unexpected, which is simple but effective storytelling.
8 "Ma Belle Evangeline"
This is one of the slower songs from the movie, with Ray singing about his love, who is a star. She's up in the sky, lighting up the world which is something he loves, although the rest of the characters aren't too sure how to take the reveal that he is in love with a star.
It's a really nice song, although the fact that Evangeline is a star does mean there's not as much emotional connection as there could be. However, the change in pace is welcomed, and it does set things up for Ray's death later in the movie, which is a very sad moment.
7 "Down In New Orleans"
The first full song of the movie is "Down In New Orleans," and this is a really fun jazz number that introduces New Orleans perfectly. It makes it clear how important music is to the characters and the energy that will be taking place within the movie.
It also showcases a variety of characters in the midst of everything, making it clear the magic is something that happens. While it's not one of the lead characters singing this one, it is still a very enjoyable song.
6 "Gonna Take You There"
This song is just an incredible amount of fun, which should always be the case with Disney. This takes place as Ray guides Tiana, Naveen, and Louis towards Mama Odie, and he is clearly just full of excitement about it. Rounding out all of his family as they light up the bayou, he happily sings along as they go.
It's upbeat and really easy to get in and sing along with, which is one of the reasons it's so good. The instrumental section goes along with it really well and while it's one of the shorter songs in the movie, it is still one of the best.
5 "When We're Human"
This is one of the most positive and upbeat songs in the movie that is sure to get people's toes tapping away as it plays. The fact it also brings Tiana, Naveen, and Louis all together as they sing about what they want to do when they turn human gives this a really nice vibe.
Being able to have different voices popping in and out makes the song unpredictable and full of life. It perfectly describes their personalities at that point as well, with each character making their claims for what they want from their life.
4 "Almost There"
Princess Tiana brings some fantastic vocals to this song, which starts out slow and emotional and then picks up pace, kicking into another great number. The song is all about Tiana's dreams, showcasing how hard she has worked, and is prepared to work, in order to achieve them.
It gives a clear definition to her character and the fact she's someone who is a real hard worker, which is quite different from other Disney Princesses. The song is full of optimism and positivity, and it has a really nice sentiment behind it.
3 "Down In New Orleans (Finale)"
The big number that brings the movie to a close is a reprise of the same song that kicks everything off, but this time it is taken to the next level. This is a huge jazz number that really does feel fitting for ending this fantastic journey, with Princess Tiana finally getting her restaurant.
Hearing her final line that dreams do come true in New Orleans while living out the dream she works hard for is a very good finishing point for the movie. But overall, it's a fun song, and getting to hear the lead character one last time, at her happiest is certainly a great moment.
2 "Friends On The Other Side"
When it comes to Disney villain's songs, there are few better than this one. Dr. Facilier is a brilliant character and his ability to use voodoo and his own charm makes him an interesting and unpredictable villain. This song is very catchy while being dark and sinister.
He lures Naveen and Lawrence in and then wows them with his abilities and predictions, which also works to describe exactly why the Prince is in the difficult situation he finds himself in. Not to mention, this scene has some cool visuals which make everything even more interesting.
1 "Dig A Little Deeper"
This song, which is belted out by Mama Odie is certainly the most enjoyable of the movie. It is just filled with happiness, positivity, and optimism, with an upbeat melody and some fantastic instrumental music all adding to it.
It's the type of song that you can't help but smile and dance along to, which is what many of Disney's greatest songs are like. This is no different, and the message it provides is really clear, with everyone involved in the scene all clearly enjoying what turns into a real party atmosphere.
