Fortnite SoundCloud-Sponsored Tournament Features Battling Musicians

The free audio sharing platform SoundCloud is hosting its own tournament in Fortnite that will feature fan-favorite musicians battling against one another. The SoundCloud Player One tournament will be broadcast live on Twitch and will feature a special half-time musical performance. It will be a battle of the bands gamers won't want to miss.

Fortnite has opened itself up to partnerships of all kinds including sponsored tournaments and in-game concerts. A number of different tournament types have been held in Fortnite including events to commemorate the start of sports seasons, celebrate the addition of content-creator skins, or events that limit how players play the game. Additionally, in-game events such as concerts have played a big role in Fortnite's history, and an entire concert series was held during 2020 featuring weekly concerts. Larger shows, such as those featuring Marshmello and Travis Scott, have shut down all other game modes to spotlight these monumental events.

Now, the SoundCloud Player One tournament looks to merge both tournament and concert as SoundCloud celebrities go head to head in Fortnite. The event will be broadcast live on SoundCloud's Twitch and Facebook pages and will be hosted by professional Fortnite commentator MonsterDface and hip-hop icon Rico Nasty. In addition to watching their favorite SoundCloud artists compete against one another in the world's most popular battle royale, viewers can enjoy a live performance from Rico Nasty during the events half-time show. The event will take place on February 18th at 8 p.m. EST.

The roster of competitors will be made up of SoundCloud creators, yet the line-up has yet to be released. According to a press release from SoundCloud, more than 49 percent of SoundCloud's user base identifies as gamers making a musically inclined Fortnite tournament an obvious way to boost creator-to-fan engagement.  SoundCloud’s VP of brand marketing, Erika Leone, wrote, "We’re stepping into the gaming space for the first time to bring [creators and listeners] together to engage in innovative ways and connect rising creators with new fans."

There's no telling who could be selected to play in the SoundCloud Player One tournament, and it sounds like there won't be any room for professional gamers like Ninja or Tfue. With such a massive library of creators, and TikTok's influence on their careers, there are plenty of options when it comes to filling out a 100-player lobby. It remains to be seen if this Fortnite tournament will feature SoundCloud artists who have seen success similar to Rico Nasty, or if it will instead highlight relatively unknown figures in the music industry.
