Actor Fisher Stevens has apologized to the cast of Friends for his on-set behavior. The titular friends were played by Jennifer Aniston, Courtney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, David Schwimmer, Matt LeBlanc, and Matthew Perry. The juggernaut series followed the group’s romantic exploits and hijinks in New York City, and became one of the most beloved sitcoms of all time. The cast is set to reunite for an HBO Max special in the near future.
Stevens guest-starred in the Friends season 1 episode "The One with the Boobies," so named for when Chandler (Perry) accidentally saw Rachel’s (Aniston) breasts. Stevens played Phoebe’s (Kudrow) boyfriend Roger, a psychiatrist. Throughout the episode, he psychoanalyzes each of the friends until they despise him. Phoebe eventually breaks it off after he calls them a "co-dependent, emotionally stunted" group.
As it turns out, Stevens didn’t make a much better impression on the Friends cast than his character did -- at least in the actor’s own opinion. On an episode of PeopleTV’s Couch Surfing, he admitted he was "kind of an a**hole" on his first sitcom gig, and didn’t think the series' stars thought much of him. Offered the opportunity to apologize, he said, "Yeah, I'm sorry guys. I'm sorry I was a d**k to you all. I apologize. I was bad, I was wrong."
Stevens explained that he had never heard of Friends at the time, and took issue that his lines had been rewritten after flying from New York to Los Angeles to film. He recalled, "'What do you mean? So I have to relearn lines that you've written that are worse than what you'd originally written?' Yeah, I was a d**k. I've rarely seen any of those people on Friends again, but I'm sure if you asked them about me, they would go, 'What a New York snob.'"
Stevens was featured on episode 13 of a series that would go on to run for 10 seasons. His season 1 episode aired more than 25 years ago now, so it seems unlikely that the cast would have hung onto his bad behavior for that long. Even if they do remember it, he was just one of many one-off significant others that the Friends crew dated, so unless he was spectacularly rude, it’s hard to imagine his time on the show stood out above all others. Still, the Friends reunion could reveal all. The special was supposed to debut when HBO Max first launched, but was delayed because of the coronavirus. The format for the reunion and the topics they’ll discuss aren't known, but there’s always a chance that guest stars like Stevens could come up in conversation.
