Keegan-Michael Key is a do-it-all comedic actor, capable of making every age-group laugh, accomplished as both an on-screen and voice actor, while also writing and producing, on occasion. The Michigan-born humorist is 49-years-old and has been in the business of chuckles for close to three decades according to his IMDb credits, which amount to 111 roles, although some are still upcoming.
There is plenty left for Key to achieve, but he's already had quite the career. He's most known for his show Key & Peele, producing five seasons alongside the similarly "un-boxable" Jordan Peele. Key's best roles besides the massively successful sketch-comedy series include everything from adult comedy to children's cartoons.
10 Don't Think Twice (6.7)
IMDb users are seemingly sleeping on Don't Think Twice, a smart drama/comedy centered around a New York improv troupe as they struggle with their individual careers' conflicting trajectories. Led by Keegan-Michael Key, Mike Birbiglia (who also wrote and directed the film) and Gillian Jacobs, the cast leads viewers down a trail of laughter while simultaneously posing moral questions regarding fame at the cost of loyalty.
The improv sequences themselves are funny, but the film's best quality is its ability to peel the curtain back on the up-and-coming comedian and highlight the sacrifices one has to make in the process. Key does an excellent job of handling the film's dramatic aspect, while also being a comedic wiz.
9 Storks (6.8)
Key's diversity of boisterous comedic voices makes him the perfect voice actor for animated family films. Storks tells the whimsical story of a group of storks who no longer deliver babies, but instead begin delivering computer equipment.
A baby girl is mistakenly made at the Baby Factory, so a stork named Junior (Andy Samberg) has to deliver the uncertified girl before his boss finds out. Key and Jordan Peele both make appearances in the film as Alpha Wolf and Beta Wolf, respectively. The 2016 animated film did fairly well in the box-office, bringing in $183.4 million.
8 The Lion King (6.9)
The live-action recreation of The Lion King found tremendous success in terms of box-office numbers, accumulating $1.67 billion and breaking several records. Key does the voice of Ed amongst a cast packed with stars, including Donald Glover, Beyonce, Seth Rogen, and more big names.
Director Jon Favreau certainly succeeded financially with the film, but critics and fans alike seemed to be split on their evaluations, landing the film with a score of 6.9 compared to the original's 8.5.
7 Friends From College (6.9)
Friends from College brings together an all-star cast of comedic actors in Key, Cobie Smulders, Billy Eichner, along with plenty of others. The Netflix series was unfortunately not renewed for a third season to fans' dismay. The thriving chemistry on display between the cast-members adds more confusion for fans as to why Netflix would cancel the series.
Still, the show's two existing seasons are fairly hilarious, and its more serious/dramatic plotline is enticing enough to entangle. Key is incomparably funny throughout, as viewers watch him struggle between the excitement of lingering desires and the security of marriage.
6 MADtv (7.2)
This sketch comedy series is based on the long-running MAD magazine, spoofing the various dimensions of pop-culture. Key joined MADtv halfway through season 9 in 2003-2004, then was promoted to the repertory cast for season 10. One of Key's most memorable characters was Coach Hines.
Key ended his time at MADtv in 2009 after season 14. Jordan Peele was also on the show's roster, having left and joined the show one year before his future partner.
5 Dolemite Is My Name (7.3)
This 2019 comedic biopic retells the story of performer Rudy Ray Moore and his character Dolemite, the protagonist in the classic kung-fu blaxploitation film of the same name, released in 1975. The film traces Moore's ascent to fame and the trials and tribulations of operating in Hollywood as a Black man during that time.
Eddie Murphy was praised for his performance as Moore, and Key was applauded for his role as Jerry Jones, the committed screenwriter who clashes with Moore's fun-loving, wild side. Dolemite Is My Name stands as Key's best on-screen performance in a feature film, which should warrant more opportunities to see him in similar projects in the future.
4 SuperMansion (7.6)
SuperMansion is an animated adult TV series on Crackle and Adult Swim. The show is similar to Robot Chicken, but it boasts a strong cast of comedic minds, including Key, Bryan Cranston and Jillian Bell.
The series ceased production after three seasons, but based on its IMDb score, it could've survived for longer than 40-something episodes, especially considering its Emmy nominations, like Key's for Outstanding Character Voice-Over. He seems to be one of the best currently in the game when it comes to voice-acting.
3 Playing House (7.7)
This comedy series follows childhood best friends Maggie (Lennon Parham) and Emma (Jessica St. Claire) as they raise a baby together. The show ran for three seasons on USA Network and garnered a considerable following, but was canceled due to USA's ratings drifting away from comedy and more towards edgier dramas, like Mr. Robot.
Key plays the core-role outside the ladies in Mark Rodriguez and he appears in every episode except for three. The three seasons of Playing House can be watched on Hulu with a premium subscription.
2 Toy Story 4 (7.8)
A Toy Story 5 has yet to be formally confirmed. However, there is a surplus of reasons for the franchise to continue into a fifth chapter. Toy Story 4 is only about a year-and-a-half old, so audiences may have to wait a few years considering the decent gaps between its predecessors.
One thing Toy Story fans can count on is Ducky (Key) returning for the fifth film, after he, Bunny and the others helped Woody return to Bonnie. Toy Story 4 is another film in Key's category that has surpassed $1 billion at the box office. Life has been treating him well since his time on Key & Peele.
1 Green Eggs And Ham (8.2)
Key narrates this Netflix animated/family series based on the famous Dr. Seuss story. The series' first season was released in 2019 and was renewed for a second season, which has yet to be released. The TV-Y7 show is perfect for any child, winning an Emmy in 2020.
Although Green Eggs and Ham only has close to 2,000 user ratings on IMDb, it stands out as Key's best-rated TV series or movie, while exhibiting the comedic actor's versatility and prowess as a voice actor.
