King Of Fighters 15: Which Character Has Won The Most Tournaments

The King of Fighters' titular tournament has existed for decades, and there is one character who stands alone with the record for the most wins in its history. The franchise began in 1994, when The King of Fighters '94 launched in arcades and on SNK Corporation's NEO-GEO platform. The history of the tournament itself, however, dates back even before its eponymous series, having been established within the Art of Fighting and Fatal Fury franchises.

Throughout the history of all three franchises and its own numerous spin-offs, the King 0f Fighters tournament has seen hundreds of competitors participate. What started as a one-on-one tournament evolved into the three-on-three system the franchise has become known for. Oftentimes, the winner of the tournament is the team involving one of the lead characters for KOF's current story arc.

Series mainstays such as Kyo Kusanagi and Terry Bogard have entered the King of Fighters tournament without fail, while some characters miss or skip a tournament for a reason outlined in their storylines. However, Terry Bogard's only victories in the tournament came during the Fatal Fury games, when he picked up three victories over the course of the series. Art of Fighting's Ryo Sakazaki predates Terry, yet he only has one tournament victory to his name. Despite not being a primary protagonist in the series, the person with the most tournament wins has often found himself on the winning team.

Under the current system of King of Fighters tournaments, the team with the most victories is Team Japan, comprised of Kyo Kusanagi, Goro Daimon, and Benimaru Nikaido. As a team, the trio went on an undefeated tear and captured the first four championships consecutively, from KOF '94 to KOF '97. Team Japan also went on to win the latest tournament in KOF 14, so the team stands with five total tournament victories. Kyo's history as the debut protagonist has branded him as one of the franchise's most recognizable figures, but it's his go-to teammate that actually steals the crown.

Characters from each team have often found themselves rearranged as the series marches on. In one recurring case, Benimaru of Team Japan finds himself on each particular story arc's leading team. This has resulted in Benimaru's record growing slightly above that of his old teammates, as he also claimed victory during KOF '99 and KOF 11. The two additional tournament wins put Benimaru at the top of the crowd, with seven total victories. With Benimaru teaming up with Shun'ei and Meitenkun to form the Hero Team in the upcoming KOF 15, it's very possible another King of Fighters tournament victory is in Benimaru's sights.
