Ryan Oubre and Clara Fergus are one of the more stable couples on this dramatic season of Married at First Sight. But they still have one major issue in their relationship: Ryan's hesitancy to say "I love you." In this exclusive video, Pastor Cal tries to get to the bottom of Ryan's fear of the L-word and reassure him that marriage is not as scary as it seems.
Newlyweds Ryan and Clara said their vows on Married at First Sight only moments after meeting for the first time. The matchmaking experts hoped that Clara, a spunky 27-year-old flight attendant, would be the perfect match for Ryan, a meticulous 29-year-old software project manager. Following their wedding day, Ryan and Clara went on their honeymoon to Las Vegas with the other season 12 couples. There, they discussed their views on religion, children, and living arrangements.
In this exclusive sneak peek at Wednesday's new episode, Ryan and Clara sit down with Married at First Sight expert Pastor Cal Roberson to discuss the state of their marriage. Despite being in long-term, committed relationships in the past, Ryan has never said "I love you" to a significant other. Clara, who has been the more emotionally involved partner in her past relationships, feared that her new husband wouldn't be able to open up and reciprocate her effort. Pastor Cal explained to Ryan that love is not just a feeling, it is "an intellectual decision we make to fulfill another person's legitimate needs." He reassured Ryan that he could build love with Clara by continuing to be committed to their marriage and honoring Clara's needs in the relationship.
In a season that has been decidedly overshadowed by drama, arguments, and an unplanned pregnancy, Ryan and Clara have emerged as a quietly solid couple. Ryan and Clara, just like their co-stars Briana and Vincent, seem to be emerging as a fan-favorite pairing this season. However, the other newlyweds have not had such smooth sailing. After co-star Chris revealed that his ex-fiancée was pregnant, Clara and fellow bride Virginia asked Chris how he was dealing with the news while being newly married to Paige. Chris became irate and the conversation quickly escalated. Although Clara kept her cool throughout the confrontation, Ryan later advised her to stay out of the other couples' business.
Despite the progress they've already made in their marriage, Ryan and Clara still have a lot more work to do before they decide to stay married or get a divorce at the end of the season. Here's hoping that they can make it through the trials of newlywed life.
