RHOSLC: Why Fans Aren't Buying Mary Cosby as a 'Spiritual Leader'

Mary Cosby's church ties are being questioned once again by skeptical fans. After last week's episode of The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City, some fans voiced their concern over Mary's role as a "spiritual leader."

While Jen Shah has brought the most drama, Mary Cosby has brought the most controversy to the premiere season of RHOSLC. Before the show even aired, Mary was making headlines for her unconventional arranged marriage to her step-grandfather. While on the show, Mary revealed how it was her late grandmother's desire for her to marry her second husband in order to inherit the family's church. While that made many scratch their heads, things only got more peculiar when the First Lady revealed she drives to multiple 7-Eleven's if she sees Black people standing out front. To make matters worse, audio leaked of her calling her congregation poor for not giving her the amount of birthday money she expected to receive.

In last week's episode, Mary showed off more highlights from her home and church life. But, after watching, many fans took to Reddit to share how "disturbed" they were by Mary's lifestyle. "This is different than the wacky women we often see- this woman is a “spiritual leader” but seems like a little girl pretending to know what she’s doing," a Redditor said in a thread titled after the Bravo star. "Bossing, falling all over herself with the pastor histrionics, walking around her empty house with fancy clothes," they added before sharing their suspicions of Mary's hidden secrets. "Between that grandmother, her husband, her religion - my feeling is this is a deeply damaged human being. It makes me uneasy," the fan added.

The strong opinion comes after Mary's seemingly hypocritical views while boasting about her role in the church. Other fans joined the thread and shared their opinions of the reality star while comparing her church to a cult. "Looking at the watchdog (IIRC) database of cults in America was both surprising and affirming," said one Redditor. "So many small 'churches' that are really just cults in disguise, basically ruining people’s financial health." The comment came after one fan shared information about an Instagram account that did a deep dive on Mary's church. The allegations appeared to have increased skepticism of Mary's church and lifestyle.

"I have empathy for Mary, but at this point I still don’t think she’s an innocent victim," the fan continued. "I’m sure it started out that way, but how she stepped into becoming 'god' moved her from victim to abuser in my mind." There have been rumors that Mary might not return for another season. However, nothing other than season two has been confirmed. One thing's for sure, Mary has the fans talking.
