Riverdale: 10 Of Jughead's Literary References, Ranked Least To Most Pretentious

As the narrator of Riverdale, Jughead Jones often waxes poetically about his situation and friends. Mostly seen from his usual table at Pop's, these philosophical musings would be nothing without Jughead's pop culture references.

These quotes sit on a spectrum that ranges from introspective to way out there. The teen sleuth considers himself a writer and many of his sayings and lines have an air of self-importance. His references are varied, but it isn’t hard for him to go over the top.

10 “Hiram Is Like Dracula: Snapping Up Properties From All Over Riverdale To Expand His Empire And Feed."

Bram Stoker’s epistolary novel has been a cultural touchstone since it was penned. It produced many movies and has spawned folklore tales for generations after its publication. Not the most obscure reference Jughead has to offer, it is one that easily identifiable.

When feeling threatened, Jughead can tend to fly off the handle and did so when he discovered Hiram's plan. Hiram was taking over Riverdale for his SoDale project and cannibalizing the town to do it. Jughead took this personally and let his flair for the dramatic get the better of him.

9 “You Haven't Gone Full Yellow Wallpaper On Me Yet, Have You?"

One of Jughead’s more creative references, the short story by Charlotte Perkins Gilman applies easily to Betty Cooper. Betty is at times "stuck in a madhouse" by her extreme mother and serial killer father.

The story itself features a woman whose husband forces her to rest in a room with yellow wallpaper. He doesn’t allow her to work or write and slowly the woman is driven insane. Though Jughead meant it in jest, there is a ring of truth to the story’s mention.

8 “Riverdale’s Very Own 'In Cold Blood.'”

Riverdale has admittedly yet to show Jughead's finished manuscript of the mystery surrounding Jason Blossom, but there was a time when it was his main drive on the show. At the beginning of season one, Betty convinces Jughead to join the school paper.

The Blue and Gold could be a place where he could do his writing and investigation. Of course, Jughead considers himself the second coming of Truman Capote and he compares his works to the famous true crime novel that started as a series of articles.

7 “Like The Red Death Showing Up In An Edgar Allen Poe Story, The Black Hood Had Come To Riverdale.”

Edgar Allen Poe is on-brand for Jughead, as far as style and subject matter goes. The Masque of the Red Death is not Poe’s most famous story, but it is well known enough that it makes sense that Jughead would mention it offhand, as he has an appreciation for gothic literature.

The Black Hood fell upon Riverdale, dispensing justice as he saw fit. He killed the alleged sinners of the town, whether they deserved it or not, just like a story written by Poe.

6 “Well Then, Consider Me Your Philip Marlowe. I Don't Mind Playing Detective, Especially For This Price."

What is most surprising about this reference is that it wasn’t made sooner. Philip Marlowe was one of the most famous gumshoe detectives in literature and most notably portrayed by Humphrey Bogart in films such as The Big Sleep.

Jughead would idolize writers such as Raymond Chandler, who penned the original novels featuring this character. Jughead is always on the trail of a mystery and would feel most at home in a film noir.

5 “As Mark Twain Said, 'Rumors Of My Death Have Been Greatly Exaggerated.'"

Jughead proudly quotes Mark Twain after the botched attempt on his life. The quote doesn't come from the famous author's books but is still a reminder that Jughead consumes everything and anything literary.

This line is one of the only good things to come out of the plotline of Jughead faking his own death. Whether pretentious or not, it is a good line to spout when facing a group of prep schoolers who attempted to kill you.

4 “This Friday? As In The Ides Of March?”

When Jughead was told that the deadline to finish his book was fast approaching, it came as no surprise that he referred to the famous line from Shakespeare's Julius Caesar. Jughead did beware of the Ides of March, but not because of his book deadline. This date was the night that his classmates had planned on killing him.

The Ides of March is referred to by many people in this episode, but Jughead was probably one of the only people that read the play.

3 “You Got A Lousy Work Ethic And A Toxic Relationship And You Drink Too Much." "So Did Kerouac And Hemingway And Fitzgerald."

One of the most anticipated moments of season five was the shows’ seven-year time jump. After the core four characters drift apart, Riverdale jumps forward in the timeline.

Jughead was just coming off of the success of his first book, and like many one-hit wonders, he struggled to come up with his follow-up. When in doubt, Jughead takes himself seriously and compares himself to the most famous writers of the 20th century.

2 “I Have A Hard Holden Caulfield Stance On Phony Small Talk.”

Jughead would have read Catcher in the Rye and, unsurprisingly, would have misunderstood the point of it. While still at Stonewall Prep, the guidance counselor, Mrs. Burble, calls in Jughead to Riverdale High regarding his transcripts.

In true Jughead fashion, he is immediately standoffish. He refers himself to Holden Caulfield, even though the point of the book is that Holden is the phony one.

1 “Life Isn’t An Agatha Christie Novel. It’s A Lot Messier.”

This quote is spoken by Jughead early in the show and then called back at his funeral in season four. His funeral was as fake as his death, although Jughead's earnestness remained real.

This quote is apt for Jughead since Agatha Christie herself went missing mysteriously in 1926 before turning back up 11 days later. This line is painfully self-referential and perfect for Jughead.
