Saved By The Bell Reboot Season 2 Considered Adding Dustin Diamond

The Saved by the Bell reboot season 2 considered adding Dustin Diamond, who portrayed Screech Powers in the original series. Created by Sam Bobrick, Saved by the Bell was one of the most influential young adult sitcoms of the '90s and propelled Diamond to fame among teenage circles for his role as dorky sidekick Screech. Portraying Screech for over a decade of his life, Diamond appeared in Saved by the Bell from its early days of Good Morning, Miss Bliss through Saved by the Bell: The College Years.

In 2019, NBCUniversal’s Peacock announced it was giving Saved by the Bell a revival series, which premiered in November. Season 1 of Saved by the Bell featured a new influx of students, including the son of Zack and Kelly Kapowski, and returned to the halls of Bayside High. Touting numerous references to the original show, the reboot also brought back the original cast members, sans Screech, and reunited the friends 27 years later. The series explained Screech’s notable absence by stating he was living on the International Space Station with a robot. Sadly, Diamond passed away on February 1 at the age of 44 after a battle with stage 4 lung cancer.

Per TMZ, the Saved by the Bell reboot was considering adding Screech to the fresh batch of storylines in season 2. Reportedly, despite not being involved in the freshman season of Saved by the Bell, Diamond was configuring an avenue to reprise his character as Screech in the form of Kevin - Screech’s A.I. creation on the original series - for a line of insurance ads. According to TMZ, the return of Screech for the reboot series was an idea being marinated by the producers, and “they were in talks about possibly reviving some Screech storylines for future episodes.”

As it stands, Diamond’s titular robot is slated to be finished soon and is being eyed as a gift to producers of the Saved by the Bell reboot for use in future episodes to honor the late actor. Of course, the news of Diamond’s passing sent a shock wave through fans of the iconic series, as his death arrived a short time after he announced his diagnosis. However, it appears Diamond maintained a fondness for Screech and it is only appropriate that the revival pays homage to the character.

Despite the stirring of alleged controversy between Diamond and the original cast members of Saved by the Bell, Mario Lopez, Mark-Paul Gosselaar, Tiffany Thiessen, Elizabeth Berkley, and Lark Voorhies have issued touching tributes, fond memories, and well wishes to the family members of their former co-star Diamond. While it remains to be seen how the creative forces behind Saved by the Bell will infuse Screech into season 2, the upcoming episodes are an ideal way for the series to honor the character and the actor who played him for most of his career.
