Why WandaVision’s Real Shocking MCU Cameo Should Be Iron Man

Iron Man needs to be WandaVision’s real big shock appearance. Episode five included a huge shock in the appearance of Evan Peters as Quicksilver, but it wasn’t the game-changing shock it could have been. In fact, misquoted allusions to another Disney property’s shock finale cameo aside, there’s a hint that Peters isn’t even the real shock thanks to quotes from Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany. And that shock billing would be perfectly suited to Iron Man’s emotional return.

Both Olsen and Bettany had spoken up the shock in WandaVision’s forthcoming episodes ahead of Peters’ surprise appearance, but crucially both said the information had not leaked. In contrast, Peters’ suspected role in WandaVision hit the internet well before the Spanish audio dubber revealed his part earlier in the week of the fateful episode. His character simply wasn’t named. And while Olsen and Bettany could have been playing misdirection, it makes no sense that they’d even broach the subject with it already partially revealed. It makes far more sense that the billed shock would be something else on top of Pietro.

Intriguingly, Bettany’s comments promised that the actor coming in would help him realize the goal of working with this actor for the first time. While that seemingly rules out a fair few MCU returns, it’s Robert Downey Jr's Iron Man that fits the narrative bill of a return character, so everyone should hope Bettany is covering for the truth here. It wouldn't be the first time an MCU project had employed such tactics, after all, but whether it happens of not, Stark's return her would be perfect. Because with Wanda working through her traumas and faced with the impossible prospect of accepting the truth of Vision’s death, being confronted by the man who brought her into this life in the first place for a showdown makes sense. Iron Man is Wanda’s true trauma to conquer before she can deal with anything else.

As a child, Wanda saw her parents killed by Stark weaponry and the focus of her vengeance was on him as a weapons seller not on those waging war in her country. Without Tony’s imprint on her life, she would never have put herself through the traumatic HYDRA experimentation, she would never have become an Avenger, seen her brother killed by Starks own creation, killed the innocents in Lagos or met and subsequently lost Vision. Almost all of her trauma roots back to Tony in some way and a nightmarish version of him appearing as a manifested villain as Wanda loses more control would be epic. And it would be entirely fitting.

The MCU has already dealt with the toxic legacy of Tony Stark thanks to Mysterio’s role in Spider-Man: Far From Home but his role in Wanda’s early life hasn’t really been openly addressed. When Ultron revealed the extent of his plan, Scarlet Witch and her brother simply turned on him after finding their conscience. Tony may have done so too, but that has never been shown as part of Wanda’s story. It just sort of happened off-screen. Seeing her dealing with the same suppressed emotions that are informing WandaVision’s strange commercials would make a lot of sense. And Robert Downey Jr’s return would absolutely fit the narrative that’s been built around how big WandaVision’s biggest hidden secret.
