10 Harry Potter Quotes That Are Hilarious Out-Of-Context

Even today, the Harry Potter franchise enjoys a ton of continued fanfare. It’s gone down in film history as one of the best book-to-screen adaptations ever made, and rightfully so. Fans all over the world couldn’t get enough of Harry’s (Daniel Radcliffe) adventures—and misadventures—alongside best friends Hermione (Emma Watson) and Ron (Rupert Grint).

Over the years, the franchise enjoyed massive amounts of success at the box office and garnered an equally massive following. In fact, some famous lines from the movie have become the subject of memes, and, if one thinks about it, they can be hilarious when taken out of context.

10 Yeah, Size Is No Guarantee Of Power

This line was mentioned by one of Ron’s brothers, George, in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. In the book, he was talking to Harry about weapons and the kind of damage they could inflict. If this line was uttered elsewhere, however, it is almost guaranteed that people won’t be referring to weapons.

After all, there are several things in life that are essentially better when they’re bigger. Novels, for instance, or perhaps movie trilogies. As some will be quick to mention, however, bigger isn't always better.

9 Swish And Flick, Remember, Swish And Flick

These words were uttered by Professor Flitwick (Warwick Davis) while he was teaching students how to use their wands. In the film, Harry and his friends were determined to learn how to cast spells, as they can be used to defend themselves against the Darks Arts. On the other hand, it’s also a great way to learn how to cast spells for mere amusement. Of course, out of context, nobody is thinking of a "wand" in the wizarding sense of the word.

8 There Are Some Things You Can’t Share Without Ending Up Liking Each Other…

In Harry Potter, this line is referring to the fact that, after Harry, Ron, and Hermione ended up battling a troll together, the three grew closer as friends. In fact, one can argue that it was this encounter that essentially turned the three into the best of friends.

When a remark like this is used outside of the Harry Potter universe though, the thing can people are sharing can mean a myriad of different things. Sure, it can be something as enjoyable and indulgent as food, but it can also refer to something like a friend dating the same person that their friend dated recently. It would be awkward, but they’d have a lot more to talk about.

7 I Am A Wizard, Not A Baboon Brandishing A Stick

In the Harry Potter universe, practically everyone has a wand. There are several kinds of them, varying by the type of wand wood used and core. They also come in different sizes, although no one knows how wand makers determine these.

In the real world though, no one accessorizes with a wand unless it’s Halloween. Hence, if anyone is going to talk about “brandishing a stick,” well, they probably aren't talking about the wizarding kind.

6 Anyone Can Speak Troll, All You Have To Do Is Point And Grunt

This line was uttered by Fred Weasley, Ron's older brother who happens to have a penchant for pulling pranks. As fans of the franchise may know, trolls appear from time to time in the Harry Potter universe. Just like most trolls, these are big, menacing, and sometimes unnecessarily violent. They also don’t communicate well with anyone else, hence Fred’s comment. In the world, someone may be referred to as a troll if they’re usually grumpy around everyone else. In which case, they might just grunt at anyone they know.

5 Get Off, Ron!

Hermione (Emma Watson) made this remark in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban while she was in the middle of confronting Draco Malfoy (Tom Felton). As both book and film fans would know, the two Hogwarts students never got along, and, when Draco decided to insult their beloved friend Hagrid (Robbie Coltrane), she couldn’t help herself.

In the book, Hermione slaps him hard across the face, and Ron tries to stop her when she does it again, and this prompts Hermione’s words. However, in the real world, this phrase has a different meaning, and it usually requires some alone time.

4 Instead, He Contented Himself With Scrawling A Note To Ron: Let’s Do It Tonight

In Hogwarts, one of the professors that Harry immediately grows close to is Hagrid, a man who has been loyal to Harry no matter what. So, when he was arrested, Harry was immensely affected. This led him to write the note for Ron.

When no one else was looking, the two wizards snuck out and made their way to the forest. In the muggle world, however, "doing it" is usually code for something else. It may involve sneaking out but it usually doesn’t involve going to the forest—though we suppose that it may not be totally out of the question.

3 Thirteen-And-A-Half Inches. Yew. Powerful Wand…

Throughout the Harry Potter universe, it was normal to talk about wands all day long. After all, they are everyone’s most important magical accessory—not to mention, wands can possibly save your life, especially when you encounter the foulest of Death Eaters or ultimately, Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes) himself. In the real world, if someone's talking about the length of their "wand," their intended meaning should be pretty obvious.

2 Hagrid’s Pumpkins Swelled To The Size Of Garden Sheds

Among all the Harry Potter characters, Hagrid is essentially the ultimate nature lover of the bunch. He's close friends with a lot of magical creatures, after all. Not only that, but this is a man who has chosen to live near the Forbidden Forest instead of occupying a room at Hogwarts, even after his promotion—although that may also be partly due to his giant of a brother lives in the forest.

He also loves to tend to his garden, and, sure, people in the real world grow pumpkins, too. But, when someone talks about pumpkins "swelling," it’s probably not the vegetable they’re talking about.

1 Ron Made A Noise That Might Have Indicated Jubilation…

This phrase was meant to describe Ron’s reaction after Harry revealed that he and Cho Chang (Katie Leung) had shared a kiss. Harry then explains that the kiss was “wet” because Cho had been crying. Evidently, she was still mourning the loss of Cedric Diggory (Robert Pattinson), the wizard who was brutally murdered by Voldemort upon his return.

Upon hearing this, it was hard to determine how Ron really felt about the kiss. On the other hand, one can also say that Ron made a noise of “jubilation” for another reason, most likely while he was in bed with someone.
