AHS' Macaulay Culkin Reveal Supports Season 10 Theme Theory

Ryan Murphy's American Horror Story set reveal featuring cast member Macaulay Culkin confirms a long-running season 10 theme theory. Production is currently underway for the horror anthology's milestone tenth season. The installment will serve as Culkin's series debut as he joins American Horror Story vets like Sarah Paulson, Billie Lourd, Evan Peters, Adina Porter, and Lily Rabe. While Murphy hasn't revealed the specific theme for American Horror Story season 10, the series co-creator continues to unveil enthralling teases, which in turn, churns up the theories.

Following the release of 1984 in 2019, the development for season 10 commenced with the plan of a fall 2020 debut. Much of the core cast was announced through a short teaser video in the early months of 2020 in following the previously used timetable. Unfortunately, the effects of the coronavirus pandemic erased any hope of a release within the calendar year, and season 10 was officially pushed to 2021 by FX. With the production stage still ongoing, it's likely the new season won't arrive until the summer months. That said, it seems more plausible FX will hold the tentpole series for the fall TV schedule, putting it in its normal slot.

In the past, Murphy has been known to playfully mess with fans' minds when it comes to announcing the theme for upcoming seasons. In fact, he even has a history of waiting until the last minute to confirm the focal point of the plot. Granted, he tends to use social media to release hints and teases about what's to come in American Horror Story. Recently, Murphy shared a photo of Culkin and co-star Leslie Grossman dressed to the nines while standing on a beach. With a caption that reads “something wicked this way comes,” Murphy is finally giving fans something while also confirming the theories that suggested season 10's theme involves aquatic horror. The sub-genre hasn't been explored by American Horror Story thus far, but Murphy's past postings have all hinted at an oceanic or beach element. With the on-set photo, viewers are finally given concrete evidence.

As with previous seasons, a portion of American Horror Story season 10 is being filmed in or around Los Angeles, California. However, the rest of the season is focusing on Provincetown, Massachusetts, as a home base. The previous Provincetown rumors stirred up the aquatic horror themes, specifically linking season 10 to New England-set Jaws and the "Lady of the Dunes." A teaser from Murphy, which featured a sharp-toothed creature, added fuel to the fire with the Jaws connection, but either way, the Massachusetts location is key. With American Horror Story's history of using its setting as an element just as important as any character, the beach Culkin and Grossman are standing on could be very significant.

With the prominence of the Murder House, Briarcliff Manor, Hotel Cortez, and Camp Redwood, season 10's beach could house an array of new secrets. Something sinister will clearly be lurking around the area, either onshore or beneath the water's surface. By showing cast members in character, Murphy is hopefully a step closer to revealing American Horror Story season 10's real theme. At this point, anything not connected to aquatic horror would be the season's first major twist.
