American Horror Story: How Every Asylum Character Died (& Why)

American Horror Story season 2 followed in the debut installment's footsteps by killing off many characters at the center of the Asylum story. After documenting the events of Murder House, the anthology series switched the focus to a fictional mental institution, Briarcliff Manor, in the 1960s. The season presented Sarah Paulson as the central figure in her role as Lana Winters, a journalist who would find herself as a patient at the institution.

While Murder House pushed the boundaries in terms of graphic content, Asylum took the terror up a few notches. Lana's unlawful imprisonment was just the start of the horrors from within Briarcliff. In addition to killer doctors like Oliver Thredson and Arthur Arden, supernatural forces came into play. With stellar performances by Paulson and co-stars like Jessica Lange, Evan Peters, Zachary Quinto, James Cromwell, and Lily Rabe, American Horror Story proved it wasn't a one-hit-wonder with Murder House.

Like the first season, Asylum featured a large ensemble cast full of supporting and guest characters. While not every main figure was killed by the end of season 2, many of them met brutal deaths throughout the different timelines. American Horror Story already proved it was more than willing to kill off characters at any time, and Asylum was no different. That said, here's every character killed in Asylum, including notable supporting figures.

Dr. Oliver Thredson (Zachary Quinto) was a psychiatrist at Briarcliff who was assigned to Kit Walker's case. Over time, it was revealed Thredson was the real "Bloody Face Killer," but he attempted to manipulate Tate to take the fall for his own crimes. Upon helping Lana Winters escape from Briarcliff, he revealed his true identity before raping her and holding her hostage. Lana ended up being recommitted to Briarcliff, allowing her to concoct a plan with Kit to share the truth about Thredson. When Lana managed to free herself from the asylum for good, she tracked down Thredson. She shot him in the head, killing him so that he wouldn't end up in prison. With Thredson's confession recorded, Kit was cleared for the Bloody Face murders.

Monsignor Timothy Howard (Joseph Fiennes) wasn't as sadistic as some of the villains in Asylum. Still, his negligence in righting the wrongs committed by Briarcliff's staff turned him into an antagonist. Howard, Sister Jude's superior, helped set up Briarcliff Manor as he had his sights on becoming a bishop. Howard confronted Dr. Arthur Arden after learning the extent of his inhuman treatment of patients. Rather than call the police, Howard felt he had no choice to follow along since he would be dubbed an accomplice. While many of the patients were suffering, including Jude, who he personally committed despite their friendship, Howard was focused on his career promotion. That all came crashing down when Lana exposed Howard during her Briarcliff documentary. Howard denied his involvement but slit his wrists shortly after.

Sister Mary Eunice McKee (Lily Rabe) was initially presented as one of the more innocent characters in Asylum. Though she worked under Sister Jude, she spent a lot of time assisting Dr. Arden. During an exorcism, Sister Mary became possessed by the Devil, which greatly affected her demeanor. She was violent and manipulative, carrying out plans to take over Briarcliff. Monsignor Howard attempted an exorcism on her when he realized she was possessed, but it didn't work. When the real Sister Mary broke through, she begged the Monsignor for death as an act of mercy. He threw her down the stairwell before the Angel of Death fulfilled her wish.

Aside from Dr. Oliver Thredson, Dr. Arthur Arden (James Cromwell) served as a main antagonist throughout Asylum. The chief physician at Briarcliff was also a Nazi war criminal, a fact that he tried to keep a secret. Dr. Arden had a history of performing inhuman experiments on the patients before leaving their mutilated bodies on the grounds of the property. Though a few patients, including Jude, caught wind of his Nazi identity, he made every effort to keep the truth hidden. When his experimentation was deemed a failure in the eyes of the aliens, Dr. Arden gave up on himself. The death of Sister Mary truly put him over the edge. While cremating her body, Dr. Arden climbed into the furnace to kill himself.

Sister Jude Martin (Jessica Lange) oversaw the employees and patients in Briarcliff after starting the asylum with Monsignor Howard. Initially cold-natured, Sister Jude had a change of heart when she realized the treatment the patients were enduring. When she tried to expose Dr. Arden, Sister Jude was framed for murder, leading to her being committed to Briarcliff as a patient. She helped Lana find a permanent escape from the asylum before spending years in solitary confinement. Kit was the one who later got Sister Jude out of the asylum, caring for her as she detoxed. Being in the presence of Kit's family helped the woman get over her past traumas until she died of natural causes in the early '70s.

While most of the major deaths involved Briarcliff's staff, some of the patients also fell victim, including Grace Bertrand (Lizzie Brocheré). She attempted to escape from Briarcliff with Kit on several occasions before being abducted by aliens. She later returned impregnated but was retaken by them when she was shot and killed. The aliens brought her back to life and delivered her to Briarcliff when she was ready to give birth. Grace and her baby eventually lived with Kit when he was cleared of the Bloody Face murders. Matters became complicated when Kit's presumed-dead wife, Alma, returned with her own child. In 1967, Alma murdered Grace with an axe after the pair had a disagreement regarding the aliens' intent.

Shelley (Chloë Sevigny): A Briarcliff patient that was diagnosed with nymphomania. After Dr. Arden cut off both of her legs, Shelley attempted to escape from the asylum. Monsignor Howard tracked her down and choked her to death to preserve Briarcliff's secrets.

Alma Walker (Britne Oldford): Kit's wife, who was abducted by aliens. Years later, she returned with Kit's child. When she ended up killing Grace, Alma was committed to Briarcliff, where she lived until she passed away from heart failure.

Pepper (Naomi Grossman): An inmate at Briarcliff sent to the asylum after being wrongfully accused of murder following the events of American Horror Story: Freak Show. Aliens later abducted Pepper, but she lived out her years back in Briarcliff before passing away in 1966.

Wendy Peyser (Clea Duvall): Lana's girlfriend in the 1960s timeline, who Dr. Thredson killed as a way to torture Lana.

Sam Goodman (Mark Margolis): A Nazi hunter hired by Sister Jude to find the truth about Dr. Arden. He was later stabbed and killed by Sister Mary due to her loyalty to Dr. Arden.

Spivey (Mark Consuelos): A Briarcliff inmate with aggression issues. Due to Arden's experimentation, Spivey became one of the "Raspers" until the doctor shot all of the mutilated patients in the act of covering up his crimes.

Frank McCann (Fredric Lehne): The Head of Security at Briarcliff, who was killed by the possessed Sister Mary. Frank's death was then pinned on Sister Jude to get her committed.

Leo & Teresa Morrison (Adam Levine & Jenna Dewan-Tatum): The newlywed couple that investigated the abandoned Briarcliff Manor in the present day. While Leo was killed by Bloody Face imposters, Teresa was skinned alive by the new Bloody Face, Johnny Morgan.

Johnny Morgan (Dylan McDermott): The biological son of Lana and Dr. Thredson, who took up the mantle of Bloody Face. After finding Lana in the present-day timeline, she shot and killed him.

Jed Potter (Devon Graye): The teenager possessed by the Devil who was killed during the exorcism at Briarcliff.
