Below Deck: What Has Rob Phillips Been Up To Since Season 8 Ended?

The cast of Below Deck was shocked to hear that a pandemic was shutting down the 2020 charter season early. The crew returned to their homes and had to find other ways to fill their time. They hoped that the 2021 charter season would happen. Crew member Rob Phillips already considered yachting his backup career. He has a surprising and specialized career on land, but finding consistent work in that niche is challenging for him.

Rob Phillips was a last-minute replacement on Captain Lee’s yacht, My Seanna. He was brought in to replace fired deckhand Shane Coopersmith on Below Deck. Despite coming late to the crew, he had time to cause plenty of drama. He quickly became friends with the infamous womanizer, James Hough, and the two made snide comments about crew mate Izzy Wouters when she was promoted and they weren’t. Captain Lee called Phillips out on Twitter, due to his immaturity and bitterness.

Phillips missed the Below Deck season 8 reunion show because he had already returned to his regular job, gold-digging. Phillips is a geologist who searches for gold and other rare minerals. After leaving My Seanna, Phillips traveled to Fiji to hunt for gold. In a stroke of bad luck, a cyclone was passing through his area at the time of the reunion show. The storm kept Phillips from being able to virtually connect to the reunion show. He has yet to strike it rich in either his geology career or in yachting, unlike other members of Below Deck, some of whom are worth millions.

With multiple members of his family being part of the navy, Phillips feels a connection to the sea. He said on season 8 that “Sailing’s always going to be a part of my life,” which explains why he picked yachting as his fallback career. Phillips can only hope that the geology business can provide him with enough work to last until charter yachts can resume business.

Bravo is planning to attempt to film Below Deck season 9 this summer, but only time will tell if they will be able to. Phillips seems to be finding plenty of geology work right now. Meanwhile, if he doesn't strike gold, Bravo has several spin-offs of the show that he could take part in. Let’s just hope he takes this time to hone his interpersonal skills, as doing so will help him get along with future yachting teammates.
