Godzilla vs. Kong Gets Retro Grindhouse Trailer | Screen Rant

Godzilla vs. Kong gets the retro grindhouse treatment in the new trailer from Nerdist. The newest film in the monster franchise premieres in theaters and on HBO Max on Wednesday, March 31. Godzilla vs. Kong is the 36th installment in the long-running monster movie series.

Directed by Adam Wingard and starring Millie Bobby Brown, Alexander Skarsgård, Kyle Chandler, Brian Tyree Henrey, Demian Bichir, Zhang Ziyi, and Julian Dennison, the sequel picks up where 2019's Godzilla: King of the Monsters left off. Yes, that means that everyone's favorite kaiju will finally be going toe-to-toe with everyone's favorite giant ape. To say that this battle is a long time coming would be an understatement. The last time the iconic monsters faced off was in 1962's King Kong vs. Godzilla, so those epic box office numbers coming out of China make a lot of sense.

Right in time to celebrate its big release, Nerdist gives Godzilla vs. Kong some retro grindhouse love with this new trailer. Presented with an old-school aesthetic, the clip features the pending battle between "The Beast from the East," and "The Scourge of Skull Island," with a style and panache that's reminiscent of the beloved B-movie's past. It's immediately apparent that they're not just advertising the highly anticipated blockbuster, giving brief glimpses of the updated visuals of Godzilla and King Kong in all their feisty neon-glowing glory, going at it over a doomed cityscape, but the presentation here is also indicative of the decades-long history these two warring titans carry on their backs. Nerdist highlights the big-budget battle, one which fans have been clamoring to see for nearly 60 years, and as much as the genre has evolved in that time, audiences are given a heaping helping of schlocky nostalgia to remind them of the long journey it took to get here.

Godzilla vs. Kong is already setting the stage for a movie theater comeback as pandemic restrictions continue to ease. One surefire way to re-ignite the motion picture industry is pitting these two larger-than-life titans at each other for everyone's amusement. The hype is definitely real for Godzilla vs. Kong. Fans have already booked over 10,000 viewing parties to celebrate the epic monster fight, the event movie reinforces the messaging Nerdist nails home in that trailer: "It's the biggest bout humanity's ever seen."
