Guardians of the Galaxy Tease Marvel's New Cosmic Threat

Potential spoilers for Guardians of the Galaxy #13 ahead!

There are many alien races vying for galactic supremacy in the Marvel Universe and in a sneak preview for Guardians of the Galaxy #13, readers learn the team is keeping an eye on all of it leading them to a disturbing conclusion—a galactic war is on the horizon.

The Kree and the Skrulls are two of the most notable species in the Marvel Universe, and until the recent Empyre crossover event, the two remained at war with each other; the fighting between the two has come to Earth on several occasions. The Shi’Ar Empire are also major players, and Marvel has dropped hints they may be the next threat the Kree-Skrull alliance faces. Other species, such as the Badoon and the Snarks, have waged war on the universe and run afoul of Earth’s heroes on occasion. It’s a harsh and hostile universe, and it's up to the Guardians of the Galaxy to defend it.

Guardians of the Galaxy #13 is the start of a new era for the book, an era that sees the Guardians move from outlaws to law enforcement as they are deputized by the Galactic Council. Along with this new mission come new members, such as Wiccan, Hulkling, and the Super Skrull. In a preview for the issue, readers see the Skrull on monitor duty; it becomes clear to readers all is not well in the galaxy. On his monitor are representatives from various alien races including the Shi’Ar (represented by Gladiator), the Progenitors (the mysterious race that created the Kree), and the Snarks. Due to Iron Man’s recent fight with Korvac, Earth is on the monitor; finally, a survey team has gone missing at the Galactic Rim, and a search party is underway.

Every blip on the Super Skrull’s monitor shows somewhere in the galaxy in distress—political unrest in the Shi’Ar Empire, the Progenitors invading Throneworld, and the Snarks ramping up their crusade against the galaxy. Law and order have broken down across the galaxy and this preview hints the Guardians will be the ones to sort it out. It is worth noting that Wiccan and Hulking—two of the Guardian’s newest recruits, are the head of the Kree-Skrull alliance and this will also no doubt have an impact on the galactic scene but also how the Guardians will handle it.

Guardians of the Galaxy #13 kicks off a new direction for the team, with new members and new threats. The issue is written by Al Ewing with art by Juan Frigeri and will be available in stores and on all digital comics outlets April 14th, 2021.
