Marvel has promised the biggest X-Men comic ever - a Planet-Size X-Men one-shot that will kick off the Hellfire Gala. Jonathan Hickman's X-Men relaunch has been a tremendous success, with the entire mutant race gathering on the living island of Krakoa. But Hickman is preparing for the next major twist - a mysterious event called the Hellfire Gala.
The Hellfire Gala is the brainchild of Emma Frost, and it will give the mutants of Krakoa an opportunity to reveal what they have planned to the entire world. It is also eagerly anticipated by fans because it will introduce the next incarnation of the X-Men, a group assembled by Cyclops and Jean Grey and featuring one character chosen by the fans. It's billed as "one of the most pivotal chapters yet in Jonathan Hickman’s X-Men era."
Marvel has now confirmed the Hellfire Gala will launch in June's Planet-Size X-Men #1, by Gerry Duggan (Marauders, Savage Avengers) and Pepe Larraz (House of X). "Make no mistake -- this is... absolutely the most important issue of the month," editor Jordan D. White insists in an official press statement. The title of the book alone promises an adventure of unprecedented scale and significance because it is a deliberate riff on the classic Giant-Size X-Men #1 that introduced the Second Genesis team in 1975. A stunning cover features Magneto, Jean Grey, Storm, and Iceman. The story of the Hellfire Gala will then continue to unfold over twelve titles and twelve stories, with each giving a different perspective on the night's events.
The Hickman era has already reinvented the X-Men franchise, but during the X of Swords event readers realized why it hadn't quite felt right; the X-Men themselves had been formally disbanded, with Krakoa's Quiet Council believing the team name would prove divisive. Cyclops and Jean Grey are reforming the X-Men, however, insisting the Quiet Council were wrong. The X-Men are mutantkind's heroes, Cyclops argued, and they are as essential as ever. Now that they'll be operating from Krakoa and with the almost unlimited resources of the mutant race behind them, the new X-Men will surely be a powerful force to be reckoned with.
The creative team on Planet-Size X-Men #1 is absolutely top-rate. Gerry Duggan is one of Marvel's best writers, able to weave in decades' worth of continuity with effortless ease and without fazing new readers. He's teamed with Pepe Larraz, the superb artist who first represented the new mutant community of Krakoa in House of X back in 2019. The combination means this double-size issue will be absolutely unmissable. "Pepe is absolutely the star of the X-line," White noted in the official press release, "and he is doing the most amazing work of his career. You cannot miss this." Keep an eye out for Planet-Size X-Men #1 in June.
