In a recent interview, Marvel’s Avengers game developer, Crystal Dynamics, explains the lack of updates to the game. Marvel’s Avengers had a lackluster launch in September of 2020 and many players have expected a plethora of updates and new features to remedy the base-game. Instead, Crystal Dynamics seemed to stop traction on future updates completely, releasing patches and fixes for the game post-launch. One patch even fixed over a thousand bugs. But another patch increased the time needed to level up characters, which actually made Marvel's Avengers worse, making it much harder to level up past level 25 in order to fix the game’s pacing issues. However, Crystal Dynamics has recently opened up about its development decisions and the lack of new content post-launch.
In a content roadmap released by Crystal Dynamics, many new features will finally arrive to Marvel’s Avengers, some that have kept fans in anxious anticipation since the game’s release. The PlayStation 5 version of the game was just released, reducing load times, and adding a performance and quality mode for its visuals. In the roadmap, a Black Panther DLC is expected to arrive in the summer, alongside plenty of new updates that bring content rather than fixes. One disappointing aspect to the road map is that Spider-Man does not appear to be arriving any time soon, but Crystal Dynamics claims the titular Marvel character is in the works and will be added to Marvel’s Avengers, but not for a while. The explanation given by Crystal Dynamics seems to answer fan’s questions about the update delays.
Reported on by Gameinformer, Crystal Dynamics studio head, Scot Amos, explains the decision to delay content updates for Marvel’s Avengers. Amos explains that in the early stages of the game post-launch, the team dedicated to developing new in-game content was told to work on patches that fix the game’s issues instead. In the interview, Amos admits that the launch of Marvel’s Avengers was imperfect, and the aim of the development team was to remedy that fact by listening to the fans and the media in order to improve the game.
While fans may disagree, Crystal Dynamics wanted to set sturdier ground before continuing to develop and add new content to Marvel’s Avengers. The delay was purposeful, and although it would have been nice to receive the next-gen release of Marvel's Avengers earlier, Amos and the team might have had a point to ensure the game was in a better state before focusing on expansion. Now, after patches that have fixed the game’s many problems, Crystal Dynamics is adding new content to the game, hopefully in the manner planned. If they follow the content roadmap laid out, fans will receive exciting updates.
Hopefully, there are no more delays to the stream of new content added by Crystal Dynamics. In a No Man Sky-esc fashion, Amos looks to improve on the game that was initially released. With promises of future MCU cosmetics coming to Marvel's Avengers and the recent news, it's definitely trending up for Marvel fans. Amos wants to keep current players engaged, bring back many fans who have already left, and garner the attention of new fans who have yet to give Marvel’s Avengers a try.
