NHL 94 Played On Stadium Scoreboard By Dedicated Hockey Fans

Two die-hard hockey fans were given the chance to play NHL 94 on a gigantic stadium video board. A classic title  developed by EA Sports and licensed by the National Hockey League, NHL '94 released in 1994 for the Sega Genesis, Super Nintendo and Sega CD consoles. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic many hockey events have been postponed, including a Stadium Series game that was intended to take place at Raleigh, North Carolina's Carter-Finley Stadium on February 20.

With live sports restricted or outright postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, sports video games experienced a heavy rise in popularity. A recent update to Madden NFL 21 made player trades more fair and easier to understand for players in an effort to reflect the real-life trading process. The game now reflects a given player's value to a specific team, rather than simply assigning them value as an individual. NHL 21, a hockey-inspired game, also allows fans to acquire players and build a team in Franchise Mode. The game features numerous star hockey players which can be acquired to fully flesh out an all-star lineup.

Joe Ovies, a radio host for Raleigh, North Carolina's Capitol Broadcasting Company, recently showed off a game of NHL 94 played by two hockey fans on a gigantic stadium video screen. The classic Sega Genesis title was played by fans of Ovies' radio station at Raleigh's Carter-Finley Stadium, which was to be the location of an outdoor ice hockey game last month. The game's cancellation led to the game of NHL 94 instead, with the fans sitting on the field's 50 yard line and playing on the big screen.

As sports game continue to grow in popularity, developers and publishers hope to continue pushing the envelope. Electronic Arts recently filed for a patent on self-playing matches, allowing artificial intelligence to compete without the player's involvement. The patented system is expected to be implemented in EA's line of mobile sports titles, with matches being carried out by AI until the player is asked to make certain strategic decisions. This system is meant for mobile games because real sports matches are typically much longer than the time that an average person plays on their phone for a single period of time.

The COVID-19 pandemic continues to necessitate the postponing or cancellation of exciting sports events. However, video games are an alternative way to experience the fun of sports without exposing oneself or others to illness. While the cancellation of the stadium ice hockey game at Carter-Finley is surely disappointing to many local fans, the enormous game of NHL 94 is a decent alternative for fans of the Sega Genesis classic.
